El Cabildo Responds with Initiatives in Antigua
In light of ongoing complaints, the Cabildo has announced specific initiatives in the municipality of Antigua. On March 31, the Island Government Council approved the basic and execution project for the Ciudad Deportiva de Antigua, with a budget of €7,024,716, marking the beginning of the bidding process. Peña was present to visit the site along with the Vice President of the Cabildo, Blas Acosta.
Just four days prior to the press release regarding bus stops, the Cabildo also announced the establishment of the first bus stop at the Nuevo Horizonte Industrial Estate, located within Antigua. This initiative includes the processing of necessary permits from the Town Hall for the installation of the corresponding bus shelter. President García emphasized that this action responds to a “historical demand” in the community.
Political Context
The dismissal of Peña occurs in a legislative term characterized by tensions between ALxAN and Coalición Canaria (CC). Reports from various island media indicate that the original agreement stipulated that Peña would hand over the mayoralty at the midpoint of the legislative term to CC’s number one candidate, David Alberto, which ultimately did not happen.
Following his removal, Nueva Canarias described the decision as “dishonest” and accused CC of instigating a “political witch hunt” against the mayor. Meanwhile, the PSOE, a partner of CC in the Cabildo, highlighted Peña’s “good management” in leading the Primary Sector.
In the 2023 elections, ALxAN secured seven councilors in Antigua, making them the most voted party in the municipality. Peña also led the Nueva Canarias candidates for Cabildo in that election, showcasing his significant role in the region’s political landscape.
