The XI Jandía Bike: A Celebration of Cycling and Community Spirit

This past weekend, the beautiful municipality of Pájara in the Canary Islands buzzed with excitement as the XI Jandía Bike event unfolded. Organized by the Ayuntamiento de Pájara’s Concejalía de Deportes in collaboration with Alisio Gestiones Sociodeportiva, the Club Ciclista Cofete, and various other organizations, the event attracted close to 250 dedicated athletes over two thrilling days of competition.

A Challenging Competition Format

The Jandía Bike, an annual highlight for avid cyclists, featured a two-part competition over the weekend of April 11 and 12. Participants faced a cronoescalada (time trial ascent) of 8.5 kilometers on the first day, testing their speed and endurance against the clock. The following day, cyclists took on a more grueling challenge with a 46-kilometer rally through Pájara’s stunning landscapes, adding a layer of excitement to the already challenging event.

Recognition from Local Officials

José Benito Alonso, the local councilor for sports, expressed admiration for the athletes who participated in this demanding test of resilience and strength. He acknowledged the event’s growing popularity and emphasized how it continues to exceed expectations year after year. “The Jandía Bike is not just a competition; it’s a celebration of our community and the spirit of sportsmanship,” Alonso remarked, underscoring the significance of such events.

The Mayor of Pájara, Alejandro Jorge, also took the opportunity to express gratitude towards the collaborating entities. His acknowledgment of their hard work highlighted the collective effort behind the event’s success. Mayor Jorge emphasized that events like the Jandía Bike are instrumental in positioning Pájara as a central hub for cycling in the Canary Islands.

Victors of the Weekend

As the dust settled, the results of the Jandía Bike showcased exceptional performances. In the men’s category, Marcos Manuel García Ortega from ULEVEL Camping Nauta emerged victorious. The women’s category was dominated by Yurena Alonso Chinea from Club Deportivo Velosa, who not only secured first place in the first stage but also triumphed in the second segment of the event.

In the general classification for the first stage, Héctor Alfaya González from Gran Canaria Bike Team and Simone Butacci from Macebike rounded out the podium. Intriguingly, the same cyclers occupied the top two positions during the rally, while the third spot was claimed by Derio Rodríguez Moreno from the club Tatlefulca Miguel León.

The women’s podium saw Yurena Alonso Chinea once again taking the lead, followed by Icha Quevedo Cabrera and Caroa Rivero García. In the second stage, Yurena’s incredible performance shone through once more, with Ruth Ibáñez Ruiz and Carolina González Hierro joining her in the top ranks.

A Growing Legacy

The XI Jandía Bike has once again closed its curtains, reinforcing its status as a key event in the cycling calendar of the Canaries. The breathtaking natural environment provides a unique backdrop that enhances both the challenge and enjoyment of the competition. The relentless efforts of the organizers ensure that the event remains at a high standard, promising exciting experiences for both participants and spectators.

The success of the Jandía Bike not only reflects the growing interest in cycling within the community but also demonstrates the community’s capability to organize large-scale sporting events. It is events like these that foster camaraderie, promote fitness, and bring together families and friends in celebration of sports and nature. As we look forward to next year, the anticipation for the next installment of the Jandía Bike continues to build, ensuring another thrilling chapter in this esteemed cycling tradition.
