Unraveling a Criminal Web: Extortion and Human Trafficking in Fuerteventura

The recent operation by the Policía Nacional has dismantled a significant criminal organization linked to a disturbing extortion scheme known as “extorsión del sicario.” This form of blackmail is believed to have impacted over 500 victims throughout Spain. The operation revealed a more insidious element — a branch of the organization based in Fuerteventura that was actively engaged in the trafficking of women for sexual exploitation.

A Major Police Operation

Initiated under the direction of the Juzgado de Instrucción number 1 in Castellón de la Plana, the operation has led to the arrest of 40 individuals. Of these, 38 were apprehended for extortion-related activities, while two were implicated in human trafficking. The police executed nine home searches, resulting in the provisional detention of seven individuals.

The Cycle of Intimidation

The investigation kick-started in May 2025, stemming from a single victim’s report. After responding to an online advertisement for sexual services, the victim received a menacing phone call from someone posing as the “manager of the club.” During this call, the victim was coerced into paying €5,000 under threats that implied severe consequences for any non-compliance.

This chilling tactic was not an isolated incident but a systematic approach deployed by the organization. The group frequently published fake ads across various contact websites, instigating a woeful cycle of intimidation once victims responded. The perpetrators exploited the fear and shame associated with sexual services, utilizing psychological manipulation to extract payments.

The Valencia Connection

Upon diving deeper into the operation, law enforcement identified at least 80 similar complaints from across Spain, with the main operational hub located in Valencia. This nexus was crucial for orchestrating victim recruitment, executing intimidating communication, and managing the extorted finances.

The organization functioned within a rigid hierarchy. Top-tier members managed advertisements and financial distribution, while lower-ranked individuals recruited others as “mules,” facilitating the movement of illicit funds through bank accounts and phone lines dedicated to the scams.

Fuerteventura’s Dark Underbelly

The investigation revealed a troubling sub-branch operating within Fuerteventura. Here, a couple was accused of exploiting women who had been lured in by false job opportunities promoted on social media and dating sites. Victims were often transported from mainland Spain and other islands, subjected to a life under strict control and limitation, all while being utterly dependent on their exploiters.

An alarming aspect of this operation was the collaboration between the two branches. The Fuerteventura group shared personal information of prostitution clients with the Valencia network for a meager €50 for each contact. This sensitive data was then weaponized in the form of extortion calls.

Criminal Enterprises Beyond Extortion

As police swept through locations in Valencia and Fuerteventura, they uncovered additional criminal activities. This included the discovery of three indoor marijuana plantations, two handguns, €3,600 in cash, and 11 roosters suspected to be used for illegal cockfighting. The authorities believe the organization used these activities as a way to launder the illicit gains garnered from their extortion business.

One particularly striking moment during the raids was the liberation of three women held as victims of trafficking in a Fuerteventura brothel. Law enforcement seized mobile devices that were likely employed for advertising sexual services and vital documentation pertinent to the ongoing investigation.

Facing Serious Charges

Those arrested now face a slew of grave accusations, including extortion, organized crime, money laundering, human trafficking, facilitating irregular immigration, drug trafficking, illegal possession of firearms, and animal abuse. This extensive list underscores the breadth of criminal activity that this organization engaged in and the profound impact it had on the lives of countless victims across Spain.
