Baptized as ‘Virgin of the Rock,’ the first lock of the new commercial dock in Puerto del Rosario

This weekend marks an important milestone in the ongoing development of the port infrastructure at Las Palmas. The first concrete caisson will be launched and temporarily anchored in the port before its final transit to the harbor at Puerto del Rosario for permanent mooring. The construction activities are being executed around the clock, ensuring that timelines for this strategic project are strictly adhered to.

Structure and Design of the New Breakwater

The project involves the design and construction of a breakwater that comprises two main sections and an additional toe. The first section is made up of two caissons, which will reach a total length of 105.30 meters. In contrast, the second section is considerably longer, featuring five caissons that will collectively measure 269.90 meters. To further enhance this structure, an accessory toe will be attached to the second section, extending 36.25 meters.

Each of the caissons is constructed from reinforced concrete rectangular blocks, designed with a lightweight inner cell structure. They are equipped with a continuous base slab at the bottom. This technical configuration not only fortifies the stability of the breakwater but also ensures its resilience against the rugged marine conditions of the Atlantic Ocean.

Substantial Investment with European Backing

The construction of the Commercial Dock Breakwater represents a significant financial commitment to the port development of Fuerteventura. The project has a total budget of €40,662,697.66, with a portion of the funding sourced from European FEDER funds. This underscores the strategic importance of this infrastructure, not only for the island itself but also within the broader context of trans-European transportation networks.
