Betancuria Welcomes New Mayor, Enrique Cerdeña

Enrique Cerdeña Becomes Betancuria’s New Mayor

On Thursday, Enrique Cerdeña stepped into the office as the fifth mayor of Betancuria since the establishment of its democratic government. This milestone follows the resignation of Marcelino Cerdeña, who held the mayoral position for an impressive 17 years and recorded three absolute majority victories during his tenure.

A Brief Ceremony

Cerdeña’s inauguration took place during a brief council meeting lasting only fifteen minutes. Esperanza González, a council member, ceremoniously passed the mayoral baton to Cerdeña. In this swift session, he gained approval from all four council votes of the United for Betancuria (Unidos por Betancuria, UPB) party, with the three representatives from the Canary Coalition abstaining. Enrique Pérez, the opposition spokesperson for the Canary Coalition, wished the new mayor the best of luck, emphasizing that his success is essential for all residents of Betancuria.

Transition of Leadership

Marcelino Cerdeña, stepping down at the age of 65 to enjoy retirement, emphasized his desire to make room for younger leadership. His legacy looms large in the local political landscape, being the only leader with an absolute majority following the municipal elections in May 2023. This handover marks a significant change in the political fabric of Betancuria, paving the way for new initiatives and perspectives.

Enrique Cerdeña’s Vision

At 51 years old, Enrique Cerdeña brings a wealth of experience as the previous deputy mayor. His familiarity with the town’s dynamics positions him uniquely to implement the necessary changes. “We will continue with the projects initiated by Marcelino,” he stated, showcasing a commitment to build upon established foundations. Key among these initiatives is the long-awaited completion of the town hall, which has been stalled for over 20 years. With additional financial support from the Fuerteventura Island Council, the project aims to finally see realization under his leadership.

Enhancing Local Infrastructure

One of Cerdeña’s immediate goals includes establishing a municipal market and building a parking garage in the historic core of Betancuria. He envisions this new infrastructure to blend seamlessly with the town’s historical aesthetics while aiming to improve services for the increasing number of tourists visiting the area. The focus on enhancing local amenities reflects his commitment to not only maintain, but also elevate the living standards within the municipality.

Tourism Development

Cerdeña’s plans also entail reinforcing Betancuria’s reputation as one of Spain’s Most Beautiful Villages, a title it holds among only five locations in the Canary Islands. “This recognition has significantly boosted our tourism, and it has also set a higher standard for cleanliness and service,” he noted. By enhancing the town’s appeal, he aims to further attract visitors and foster economic growth through tourism.

Committed to Local Progress

The leadership transition is more than just a change in personnel; it signifies a promise of continued progress and stability for Betancuria. Cerdeña’s deep understanding of local needs, combined with his previous experience, suggests a future where the town can thrive while maintaining its unique identity.

With his proactive approach and clarity of vision, Enrique Cerdeña steps into a pivotal role poised to shape the future of Betancuria while respecting its rich history and heritage.
