Constitution of the Municipalities of Fuerteventura: Marcelino Cerdeña, Mayor of Betancuria, Acknowledges Fatigue

Marcelino Cerdeña’s Re-Election in Betancuria: A Political Overview

Marcelino Cerdeña has once again taken the reins of Betancuria, securing his fifth term as mayor following the local elections on May 28th. Winning with an absolute majority, he demonstrated a solid foothold in this picturesque municipality of the Canary Islands. Yet, his victory brings with it a mix of triumph and challenges, as he navigates the dynamics of a shifting political landscape.

Context of the Elections

Betancuria, the smallest municipality in the Canary Islands, boasts a modest electorate of just 684 voters. The recent election saw a remarkable turnout of 85.73%, underscoring the engaged citizenry eager to have their voices heard in local governance. Despite the presence of four political parties on the ballot, the elections effectively reinforced a traditional bipartisanship, resulting in representation primarily for Cerdeña’s Unidos por Betancuria (Upbe) and the Coalición Canaria (CC).

Cerdeña, representing Upbe, garnered a robust 335 votes, translating to 60.79% of the votes cast, while his closest competitor from CC received 202 votes, equating to 36.66%. The other parties, the PSOE and PP, struggled significantly, with just ten and one votes respectively, highlighting the polarized nature of local politics.

Emerging Challenges

Although Cerdeña’s victory is commendable, there are notable shifts in his party’s strength. Upbe has witnessed a gradual ejection of council members since its inception in 2015, shedding two councilors in the last term and now losing another to CC. This erosion of support reflects a nuanced challenge: balancing the aspirations of his voter base while maintaining party cohesion.

The necessity for growth appears to weigh heavily on Cerdeña, as he acknowledges the “exhaustion” within his party, suggesting a pivot toward addressing broader community needs. His critics, particularly from the nationalist opposition, argue that his ongoing beautification plans might be extravagant, advocating instead for prioritization of pressing community concerns.

Vision for the Next Term

During his investiture speech, Cerdeña expressed gratitude for the renewed trust placed in him by constituents and outlined his vision for the next four years. Highlighting significant past accomplishments, he stated that his administration has successfully launched 37 projects focusing on infrastructure, environmental conservation, cultural developments, and enhancing services for the elderly, among others.

Cerdeña’s commitment to extending ongoing projects like the future shelter at Vega de Rio Palmas and the museum in Valle de Santa Inés demonstrate a strategic intent to invigorate the town’s cultural identity and community framework. He emphasized that completing such projects would be central to his administration’s priorities moving forward.

Community Engagement

In a nod to community spirit, Cerdeña acknowledged the overwhelming turnout of friends and family at his swearing-in ceremony, cementing the notion that public support will be crucial in executing his plans. His administration appears poised to begin this new term with a collective will aimed at improving the quality of life in Betancuria.

The New Council: Composition and Responsibilities

The event also witnessed the swearing-in of new council members, including Enrique Javier Cerdeña Méndez, Elsa Andrea Perera Padrón, and Esperanza González Méndez, who form the government group. They are supported by fellow councilors from the opposition: Enrique José Pérez Brito, Manuel Alejandro Méndez Domínguez, and Genaro Tomás Armas Brito. The dynamic within the council will be essential as they collectively navigate the political terrain and address the challenges ahead.

Looking Forward: Community Priorities and Political Landscape

The return of Cerdeña to the mayoral office signals a continuation of his political journey intertwined with local history and identity. His vision and the forthcoming administrative strategies will be critical in determining how effectively Betancuria evolves amidst changing needs and aspirations within the community. As residents eagerly await the rollout of the new initiatives, their active involvement will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of governance in this vibrant locale.
