Contramapas: Walking Towards Social Inclusion

Introduction to Contramapas

The innovative project “Contramapas, caminando hacia la inclusión social” has made a significant journey to Fuerteventura, marking its latest phase in the broader initiative aimed at promoting social inclusion through outdoor activities. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Atlas Association, recently moved from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura thanks to the support of Fred. Olsen Express, the official partner facilitating inter-island transport.

A Journey Enriched by Art

On a vibrant Monday, the journey took participants onboard the Bocayna Express from Playa Blanca to Corralejo. This was not just a simple transfer; it was the kickoff of a series of maritime events planned throughout the journey. The artistic team from Contramapas offered a delightful workshop in music and dance rooted in Canarian traditions. Passengers enjoyed a lively cultural experience that showcased the island’s musical heritage, emphasizing the use of traditional instruments like chácaras, tambores, and castañetas. Such interactive experiences serve to deepen participants’ understanding and appreciation of the GR131 trail while celebrating local art.

Progress and Community Engagement

Having already walked over 106 kilometers of the nearly 600 kilometers planned until May 30, the project continues to flourish. It includes two circular routes in La Graciosa and three stages across Lanzarote from Órzola to Playa Blanca. The collaboration with the Asociación Transpirenaica Social Solidaria—a leader in social inclusion initiatives—has further enriched the project’s impact, allowing for meaningful community gatherings. Notable events took place at locations such as Sociedad Democracia in Arrecife and a gathering in Caleta de Sebo featuring the traditional music group Familia Los Toledo.

Upcoming Stages in Fuerteventura

With the initial phase in Lanzarote concluded, Contramapas is set to etch new routes across Fuerteventura. Participants will tackle six stages beginning with Lobos Island, followed by segments from Corralejo to La Oliva, La Oliva to Betancuria, and several more, before the project culminates in El Pinar on El Hierro. These carefully planned stages not only highlight the ecological beauty of the islands but also foster a sense of community as participants engage with locals and fellow hikers alike.

A Multifaceted Approach to Inclusion

Contramapas uniquely converges hiking, traditional music, community engagement, and social inclusion, creating a transformative space for young individuals. This innovative approach aims to enhance awareness and appreciation for the GR131 route among local populations. The project enjoys the backing of the Consejería de Bienestar Social, Igualdad, Juventud, Infancia y Familias of the Gobierno de Canarias and financial support from various sponsors, including Casa África and Toyota Canarias.

Supportive Partnerships

The success of Contramapas is further bolstered by contributions from several local and international entities. The initiative garners support from all seven Cabildos in the Canary Islands, ensuring a broad collaborative framework that enhances both visibility and community support. This bridging of efforts across different organizations exemplifies a unified commitment to social betterment and cultural celebration.

Embracing the Journey Ahead

As Contramapas resumes its trek across Fuerteventura, it fosters not only physical well-being through hiking but also nurtures community spirit and cultural pride. Participants will continue to build lasting connections with nature, music, and each other, embodying the project’s core values of inclusion and collaboration. Each step taken along the GR131 is not just a stride towards fitness; it’s a step towards a more inclusive and artistically vibrant society.
