FuerteGourmet’s General Assembly: A New Era for Culinary Advocacy in Fuerteventura
On June 11th, the Asociación Fuertegourmet held its Ordinary General Assembly, marking a pivotal moment for the culinary community of Fuerteventura. The assembly not only saw the renewal of its Board of Directors but also aimed to enhance its role as a staunch advocate for the interests and rights of chefs and restaurants across the island. With over 120 members, the organization thrives on collective support, and this event attracted more than 30 participants, exemplifying the commitment of the local culinary scene.
Unanimous Election of Leadership
The election process at FuerteGourmet was marked by unity, with a singular consensus candidate put forth for approval, leading to a unanimous election. Gustavo Astrada Riera, hailing from the beloved restaurant La Mamma in Corralejo, was appointed as the new president. This seamless transition reflects a strong commitment within the community to uphold shared values and goals. Taking a moment to express his gratitude, President Astrada acknowledged the trust granted to him by his peers and paid homage to the hard work of the outgoing board, particularly previous president Blas Rodríguez Melián.
A Diverse and Dynamic Board
The new leadership structure boasts a diverse array of representatives from across Fuerteventura, with key vice-presidents appointed to ensure balanced representation. Rigoberto Almeida of El Pellizco will represent the southern zone, Alexis Morales Torres from El Invernadero covers the central area, and Ángel Lirio of Casa Cecilia is the northern representative. The board also includes nine vocal members — three from each zone — along with treasurer Ramón Catalán from Bodega de Jandía and secretary José Jiménez from the Labranda hotels, ensuring a broad base of insight and experience.
Statutory Amendments for Greater Representation
A significant point of discussion at the assembly was the modification of the statutes, which aim to reposition Fuertegourmet as a professional entity dedicated not only to defending the rights of chefs but also to serving as a representative business association for its affiliated restaurants. This strategic shift will empower the organization to engage more effectively with various layers of government, from local island administrations to state-level entities.
Promoting Culinary Excellence Locally and Beyond
The assembly also highlighted an exciting lineup of activities planned for 2024. FuerteGourmet intends to make its presence felt at notable national and international culinary events, such as Madrid Fusión and the Bienal del Arroz in Cullera. Participation in national competitions, such as “Destapa las legumbres” in Valladolid, along with culinary forums in A Coruña and Barcelona, underlines the drive to elevate Fuerteventura’s culinary reputation on a broader stage. Additionally, local activities like gastronomic markets in Puerto del Rosario and “Los Lajares de Tapeo” further emphasize the commitment to celebrating local cuisine while simultaneously attracting tourists.
Financial Health and Strategic Goals
The assembly also reviewed the annual financial accounts, which showed a positive fiscal position for the organization. This financial stability sets the stage for ambitious future goals, which include bolstering the island’s gastronomic promotion, advocating for local products, and enhancing training programs for culinary professionals. Consistent efforts to improve service quality through a designated seal for associated establishments and the establishment of partnerships with educational institutions on the island were highlighted as key strategies moving forward.
A Step Toward Sustainable Culinary Practices
Among the objectives set forth by the newly elected board is a strong focus on promoting sustainability through the use of “kilómetro cero” products, a term that denotes locally sourced ingredients. This initiative not only supports local farmers and food producers but also enriches the dining experience by connecting chefs with the unique flavors of Fuerteventura.
With a renewed leadership and a clear vision, FuerteGourmet is poised to make significant strides in advocating for the culinary arts, ensuring that both chefs and restaurants in Fuerteventura can flourish and thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape.
