Celebrating the Legacy of Casimiro Camacho: A Tribute in Fuerteventura

A Honorable Tribute

On January 15th, El Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through the Department of Culture, paid tribute to one of the most beloved figures in the island’s musical heritage—Casimiro Camacho. Known as the “king of the timple,” this renowned timplista has left an indelible mark on the cultural tapestry of Fuerteventura. The highlight of the tribute was the unveiling of a sculptural bust located in the vibrant plaza of Lajares, made possible through the collaboration of the La Oliva City Council.

The Sculpture: A Work of Art

Crafted by the talented artist Blas Sánchez, the bust is molded from clay and subsequently reproduced in marmolina. Sánchez, who was present at the unveiling, added a special touch to the event with a captivating performance on the violin. His artistic contributions complement the spirit of Camacho, who was not just an artist but also a vital force in propagating the traditional music of the Canaries.

Dignitaries In Attendance

The unveiling ceremony attracted an array of notable figures, including Sergio Lloret López, the president of El Cabildo; Pilar González, the mayor of La Oliva; and Rayco León, the culture advisor. Each of these individuals acknowledged the significance of Camacho’s contributions to local culture. Camacho himself was present, flanked by family members and representatives from collaborating organizations like Toyota Faycan Motor.

A Life Dedicated to Music

Sergio Lloret López described the event as a “well-deserved tribute to a long life dedicated largely to nurturing our culture and traditions.” He emphasized how Camacho played a pivotal role in elevating the timple from merely an accompaniment instrument to a solo centerpiece, allowing Fuerteventura to reap the benefits of his generous commitment to education and cultural preservation.

The Words of Gratitude

Mayor Pilar González expressed heartfelt thanks to all attendees for honoring such a significant cultural figure. She emphasized that Camacho’s influence extends beyond music; he is a great ambassador for the culture of La Oliva. Rayco León added, “Today we fulfill a pending assignment by paying homage to a great reference, even nicknamed the king of the timple.” His words underscored Camacho’s impact in bridging traditional folklore with contemporary stages, enriching the majorera identity.

Camacho’s Musical Journey

Casimiro Camacho López, born in 1932, grew up in a family of musicians in Lajares. His early exposure cultivated an innate curiosity and dedication to music, leading him to become a quintessential representation of the timple. His musical journey included being part of the legendary trio Los Paraguayos, which helped put the canary instrument on international platforms, performing in renowned theaters across Spain, France, and Italy.

Teaching and Influence

Beyond performances, Camacho dedicated part of his life to teaching the timple in Las Palmas. His classroom became a nurturing ground for future artists, including the renowned Domingo Rodríguez, known as El Colorao. Camacho’s unique strumming and plucking style has left a lasting impact on the genre, securing his legacy as a pivotal figure in the evolution of canary folklore.

A Comprehensive Celebration

The day’s festivities didn’t stop at the bust unveiling. The program also featured a concert in honor of Camacho and the launch of a book authored by Elías Rodríguez, celebrated at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos. This holistic approach to honoring Camacho not only commemorates his contributions but also continues to inspire future generations to engage with the rich musical heritage of Fuerteventura.

In embracing the life and legacy of Casimiro Camacho, the island reaffirms its commitment to preserving and celebrating its cultural identity, showcasing the enduring power of music in uniting communities and inspiring individuals.
