Fuerteventura Takes Center Stage at FITUR with a Unified Image in Island Promotion

Fuerteventura Shines at FITUR 2025: A New Era of Sustainable Tourism

Fuerteventura has once again taken center stage at the International Tourism Fair in Madrid, known as FITUR 2025. Here, the island is showcasing a fresh and innovative tourism strategy aimed at promoting responsible travel experiences. Under the banner of “Fuerteventura,” the island’s tourism board has unveiled a compact promotional campaign that highlights the diverse offerings available across its municipalities, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its unique charms.

Key Figures at the Event

Attending the inauguration of the Canary Islands’ stand were prominent figures such as Lola García, the President of the Cabildo, and Marlene Figueroa, the Tourism Counselor. This widely attended event brought together numerous authorities from the Canary Islands and a multitude of industry professionals and entrepreneurs. The discussion centered on last year’s success and the promising forecasts for 2025, as Fuerteventura continues to solidify its status as a competitive tourist destination.

A Commitment to Quality over Quantity

Lola García emphasized Fuerteventura’s commitment to prioritizing quality tourism instead of sheer numbers. “We come to FITUR to strengthen and consolidate our destination,” she stated. García highlighted the significant economic impact of tourism on the island, which amounted to around €3 billion in revenue during 2024. This approach seeks to foster a sustainable destination that respects local lifestyles and natural resources while redistributing the economic benefits more equitably among residents.

A Fresh Image for Fuerteventura

Tourism Counselor Marlene Figueroa echoed García’s sentiments, noting that this year’s promotional efforts would present a renewed and vibrant image of Fuerteventura to the world. The campaign brings to the forefront the island’s environmental, cultural heritage, and the extensive outdoor sporting opportunities it offers. “We are revitalizing our destination’s image through coordinated efforts across all municipalities,” she said. This strategic initiative is designed to enhance Fuerteventura’s competitiveness, improve connectivity, and diversify its tourism offerings.

Strategic Meetings at FITUR

Throughout the event, technicians from the tourism board had a busy agenda filled with meetings with top travel executives, hotel groups, and airlines allied with Fuerteventura as a destination. In total, 27 professional meetings were scheduled over the three days of the fair. Noteworthy discussions took place with key players like the Meliá Group, Alpitour-Jumbotours, and Viajes El Corte Inglés, fostering strategic partnerships to ensure the island’s positioning and competitiveness in the summer and winter seasons of 2026.

Pioneering Innovations in Tourism

In the FITUR Tech&Business zone, the Tourist Business Association ASOFUER presented a summary of their Big Data Tourist Fuerteventura Destination project. Funded by the European Union’s Next Generation funds, this initiative aims to develop a platform for managing large volumes of tourism-related data. It will serve as a vital resource for analysis and insights regarding trends and forecasts, beneficial for businesses, public administration, and industry professionals alike.

Celebrating Sustainability in the Industry

On the evening of January 21, Lola García and Marlene Figueroa attended the 11th ReThink Tourism Awards, where the Igramar Morro Jable establishment was recognized as one of Spain’s leading sustainability and hotel rehabilitation projects. This accolade aligns perfectly with the island’s vision for sustainable tourism, demonstrating exemplary practices in the sector.

Diverse Municipal Offerings

Fuerteventura’s various municipalities presented an array of exciting events aimed at tourists while also catering to local residents’ needs. The municipality of Pájara, represented by Mayor Alejandro Jorge, announced the 44Cup Marina de Jandía scheduled for November, which will add to the existing calendar of renowned sports events like the Marlin Cup and the Windsurf World Championship.

In La Oliva, Mayor Isaí Blanco introduced a wide range of cultural and recreational events, including the Kite Festival and the International Blues and Jazz Festival, which aim to attract visitors while satisfying resident demand. The local tourism agenda spans from sporting events to gastronomic festivals, ensuring varied attractions for all.

Enhancements in Accessibility and Digital Presence

The municipality of Antigua, under Mayor Matías Peña, has reinforced its dedication to family tourism by launching a redesigned, modern website. This platform enhances the visitor experience, allowing tourists to explore the beautiful offerings of Caleta de Fuste interactively.

Puerto del Rosario, represented by Mayor David de Vera, is focusing on cruise tourism and enhancing the city’s appeal as a welcoming capital with events like the Sun and Moon Festival, along with promotional efforts for local cuisine and key infrastructure.

The municipality of Tuineje also showcased its commitment to blending accessible tourism and sports, presenting notable events such as the Gran Tarajal Fishing Open and the Bestial Race 2025, alongside cultural festivals celebrating their unique heritage.

Robust Visitor Growth Trends

According to data released by Frontur and Istac, Fuerteventura welcomed 2,515,461 tourists in 2024, marking a substantial 10.6% increase compared to the previous year. This growth signals success for the tourism board’s strategies aimed at enhancing regular air connectivity, further establishing the island as a strong competitor among Spanish tourist hotspots. With an impressive hotel revenue per available room (RevPAR) index of €90.6, Fuerteventura’s market position is on an upward trajectory, indicating a positive outlook for its tourism industry.
