XXIII Travesía a Nado de Isla de Lobos-Fuerteventura: A Celebration of Resilience and Community
This past Sunday, the picturesque coastal town of Corralejo served as the backdrop for the XXIII Travesía a Nado de Isla de Lobos-Fuerteventura, an exciting swimming event that brought together 207 participants from a range of backgrounds. After a necessary hiatus due to the pandemic, this annual contest made its vibrant return, showcasing not only the athletes’ competitive spirit but also the unity of the community in promoting sports.
Organizing a Comeback
The event was meticulously organized by the CD Herbania and Club Charco Herbania Atlético, with valuable support from local entities, including the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva, Cabildo de Fuerteventura, and Patronato de Turismo de Fuerteventura, among others. This collaboration was crucial, emphasizing how community efforts can come together to create profound experiences for local and visiting athletes alike.
Ideal Conditions for a Swim
Participants enjoyed exceptional maritime conditions this year, resulting in a smoothly conducted event. The warm and clear waters provided not only a safe swimming environment but also an exhilarating atmosphere for both competitors and supporters. This year’s edition witnessed impressive timings as many swimmers exceeded their personal bests, highlighting the dedication and training that each athlete had invested in preparation for this challenge.
Record-Breaking Swimmers
The competition involved a formidable distance of 3,400 meters, spanning the stretch between the Islet of Lobos and the Corralejo marina. The first to cross the finish line were standout swimmers: Jorge García Moreno, marking a brilliant time of 41:33, followed by Aitor Hernández Alonso at 46:40, and Aday Avero Rodríguez from CD Herbania, who finished at 47:32 in the male category. On the female side, Elena Sarmiento Guerra led with an impressive time of 52:34, followed closely by Melissa Vigui at 55:08 and Raquel González Tojo at 55:11. Their achievements reflect not only talent but also the hard work that these athletes have put into their training.
A Step Towards Broader Competitions
Highlighting the event was the inaugural leg of the V Copa de Canarias de Aguas Abiertas. In this sub-competition, Aitor Hernández Alonso emerged victorious for the male category once again, securing the win with a time of 46:40, while Elena Sarmiento Guerra dominated the female category, finishing at 52:34. This segment of the event attracted significant attention, bringing together athletes who shared a common goal—to test their limits in open water swimming.
Celebrating Volunteerism and Community Spirit
Inma Díaz, president of the CD Herbania, expressed immense pride in the collaborative spirit that propelled the event forward, noting, “It’s a source of pride to see how, without being a professional event organizing company, and with the help of volunteers—who give their time without any compensation—we have successfully executed this swim. It demonstrates that with willpower, we can create meaningful opportunities to promote both amateur and federated sports.”
This statement encapsulates the heart of the event, showing that the essence of community spirit can flourish even in challenging times. The dedication of volunteers and the support from local sponsors not only made the event possible but also created an engaging environment that celebrated sportsmanship and camaraderie.
A Festival of Sports and Community
The XXIII Travesía a Nado de Isla de Lobos-Fuerteventura is more than just a swimming competition; it embodies resilience, community support, and the joy of sports. As the athletes achieved personal glory and records, the event reinforced the importance of coming together to promote wellness through sports and encourage the next generation to embrace similar passions.
With its picturesque setting and enthusiastic participation, the 2023 edition leaves a lasting impression, promising even greater gatherings and sporting celebrations in the years to come.
