Geolodía 2024: When Fuerteventura Ended at Lajares

El Geolodía Fuerteventura 2024: A Journey into the Island’s Geological Secrets

Exploring Sandy Deposits and Paleosols

Mark your calendars for May 12, 2024, as Fuerteventura opens its geological treasures to enthusiasts and curious minds alike. This year’s Geolodía will focus on exploring sandy deposits and recent paleosols in the southern region of the island, particularly in the historic Melián quarry located in the Jable ravine, just south of Lajares.

Event Kick-off

Participants are invited to gather at 09:00 AM at the Estación de Guaguas in Puerto del Rosario. From there, a bus will transport attendees to Lajares, where a scenic walking itinerary of approximately 3 kilometers awaits. The day will wrap up around 3:00 PM, providing ample time to immerse yourself in the geological wonders of this unique landscape.

A Glimpse into Geological History

During the walking tour, participants will uncover various levels of paleodunes, paleosols, and layers of pyroclastic deposits that have emerged over the last 400,000 years. Notably, around 135,000 years ago, volcanic eruptions that formed the Malpaís Chico altered the marine landscape north of Lajares. At that time, the island’s northern coastline extended through what is now Lajares, making this area a fascinating point of intersection between geological history and the island’s evolving coastline.

Uncovering Climatic Changes

The deposits participants will examine were shaped under changing climatic conditions, which triggered cycles of movement in organogenic sands and the formation of paleosols. These geological records tell a story of the island’s past climate, revealing how natural forces have carved out the landscape we see today.

Guided Exploration with Experts

The tour will be led by a team of seasoned geologists, including Juan Miguel Torres, María Candelaria Martín, Margarita Jambrina, and Ramón Casillas. These experts will act as guides and interpreters of the landscape, helping participants to observe and analyze the characteristics present in these geological formations. Think of them as detectives unraveling the secrets of the past, working to reconstruct the likely “crime scene” of our changing climate.

Participation Details

Space is limited to 80 participants, making early registration essential. Interested individuals can sign up starting at 8 AM on May 2, 2024, until May 7, or once the available spots are filled, by visiting the designated link: Fuerteventura Environment. As spots are limited, confirmations will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Encouragement from Local Authorities

Carlos Rodríguez, the island’s Councillor for Environment and Hunting, encourages everyone interested to join this initiative. He highlights the importance of observing the environment, understanding geological processes, and recognizing the need to protect geological heritage. Such voyages into nature not only broaden our knowledge but also heighten awareness of our role in preserving these treasures.

Coordinated Efforts for Educational Impact

The Fuerteventura Geolodía 2024 is organized by the Geological Society of Spain (SGE), in collaboration with several organizations, including the Spanish Association for Earth Sciences Education (AEPECT), the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME-CSIC), Repsol, the Association of Spanish Geologists and Geophysicists in Petroleum (AGGP), and the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS).

Particularly noteworthy is the collaboration with the Department of Animal Biology, Edaphology, and Geology at the University of La Laguna and the Cultural Chair “Telesforo Bravo” from the University’s Vice-Rectorate of Culture and Extension. The national sponsorship by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, under the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, along with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, partially finances this remarkable activity.

A Unique Opportunity

The Geolodía Fuerteventura 2024 is not just an event but a remarkable opportunity to engage with the island’s geological past. Through this guided exploration, participants can gain a deeper appreciation for the dynamic interplay of natural processes that have shaped Fuerteventura and foster a greater sense of environmental stewardship. Whether you’re a geology aficionado or simply curious about the world around you, this event promises insight and inspiration in equal measure.
