Tourism Cooperation Between Hainan and Madrid Gains Momentum
Recently, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, China, hosted a vibrant tourism promotion seminar at the China Cultural Centre in Madrid. This event was pivotal in enhancing cultural and tourism cooperation between Hainan and Spain, showcasing the island’s rich offerings and potential for collaboration.
The seminar attracted key stakeholders, including Yang Changqing, Director of the China Cultural Centre in Madrid, and Aranzazu Urbina Álvarez, Deputy Director for Sustainability and Tourism Development for the Community of Madrid. Over 30 representatives from businesses, travel agencies, and industry associations participated, eager to explore new avenues for collaboration.
During the discussions, participants delved into opportunities for cultural exchange, development, and travel trade partnerships. Local stakeholders expressed keen interest in Hainan’s diverse offerings, engaging directly with the visiting delegation to brainstorm potential business and promotional initiatives that could benefit both regions.
Yang Changqing emphasized that the seminar provided Spanish travel professionals with a clearer understanding of the dynamics within China’s inbound market. She highlighted that fostering stronger cooperation could lead to the creation of joint products and encourage a reciprocal flow of visitors between Hainan and Spain.
Aranzazu Urbina Álvarez underscored the significance of dialogue in promoting sustainable tourism. She expressed her enthusiasm for visiting Hainan Province to gain firsthand insights into its landscape and to identify further collaboration opportunities that could enhance tourism experiences.

Cultural exchange initiatives between Hainan and Madrid have flourished over the past year. Notable events, such as Hainan Food Week in Madrid, have successfully introduced local audiences to the island’s unique culture and cuisine. Furthermore, Hainan has established a promotion office in Madrid, aimed at fostering ongoing stakeholder engagement and enhancing the visibility of its tourism offerings.
Wang Yuechuan, Director of the International and Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Market Promotion Division, revealed that efforts are underway to establish a direct flight route between Madrid and Haikou. Additionally, initiatives are being implemented to improve services for international travelers, including enhanced payment systems and multilingual support, making travel more accessible for European visitors.
