Advancements in the Corralejo Port Project: A Sustainable Approach

A New Vision for Corralejo

Recently, Jana González Alonso, a member of the Canary Nationalist Group (CCa), expressed her support for the progress of the Corralejo port project in Fuerteventura. González emphasized that the redesign promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands enhances both the functionality and safety of the port while simultaneously minimizing its environmental impact. This initiative marks a significant step toward balancing development and ecological preservation.

Addressing Past Shortcomings

During a session of the Commission on Public Works, Transport, and Housing, González detailed how the new proposal rectifies the inadequacies of the previous project initiated under the so-called Pacto de las Flores. She articulated that the updated design “ensures the conservation of the environment” and effectively meets the actual needs of the port. By learning from past mistakes, this new initiative aims to create a more sustainable and practical infrastructure.

Compliance with Environmental Standards

One of the standout features of the new plan, according to González, is its strategic placement outside the Natura 2000 Network, within an already designated port use area. The project has received approval from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, citing that it significantly reduces the spatial footprint of its infrastructure while diminishing its impact on the surrounding environment. This reassessment reflects a growing acknowledgment of ecological concerns by governmental bodies.

Mitigation of Biodiversity Risks

González also highlighted that the redesign strategically lowers the risks to marine life, including cetaceans, turtles, and seabirds. The overall impact on biodiversity from the revised proposal will be “considerably lower” compared to previous plans. This emphasis on protecting local wildlife underscores the importance of integrating ecological considerations into development projects.

Concerns Over Previous Plans

In stark contrast, the legislator recalled that the 2021 project was deemed “excessive” and posed direct threats to protected areas. It threatened important ecological sites such as the Community Importance Area (LIC) “Marine Space of the East and South of Lanzarote – Fuerteventura,” the Special Conservation Area (ZEC) “Corralejo Seabeds,” and the Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) “Marine Space of Bocayna.” This misalignment with environmental priorities led to significant backlash from local institutions and communities.

Community Pushback

González noted that the previous design was met with considerable resistance from various local stakeholders, including the Local Political Council of the Majorera Assembly – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura. Many argued that any port infrastructure must reflect the high environmental value of the region. This local activism played a crucial role in advocating for a more sustainable approach to the port’s development.

Ongoing Advocacy from Local Governments

Throughout the current legislative term, both the Municipality of La Oliva and the Cabildo of Fuerteventura have consistently supported calls for an infrastructure plan that aligns with the region’s environmental priorities. This collaborative effort has paved the way for a new, more balanced proposal, indicating a shift toward more responsible governance in regional development.

Call for Coordinated Efforts

In this context, González urged the Minister of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility for the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez Valido, to continue fostering coordinated efforts with local and island administrations. She stressed the importance of expediting the project’s advancement “without further delays,” showcasing the urgency for tangible progress.

Technical Alternatives for Sustainability

In response, Valido explained that the regional government has been exploring various technical alternatives submitted to the Ministry, ultimately arriving at a feasible option. This solution not only enhances the operational capabilities of the port but also ensures the least possible environmental impact across all assessed parameters. This ongoing technical evaluation signifies a commitment to a more sustainable and effective port infrastructure in the region.

This comprehensive approach to the Corralejo port project highlights a transformative shift in planning priorities, reflecting the importance of ecological responsibility alongside infrastructure development. As stakeholders work collaboratively towards an improved proposal, the focus remains on creating a solution that serves both economic and environmental needs.
