Celebrating the Heart of the Canary Islands: Día de Canarias in La Oliva
The Ayuntamiento de La Oliva, through the dedicated work of the Concejalía de Cultura led by David Hernández and the Concejalía de Comercio spearheaded by Alexandra Martín, has unveiled its programming for the upcoming Día de Canarias. This event, celebrated annually in May, serves as a powerful symbol of the identity, history, and culture of the Canary Islands.
A Cultural Extravaganza in El Cotillo
This year, the festivities will commence in the picturesque locale of El Cotillo, running from May 18 to May 23. The chosen venue epitomizes the vibrant traditions and cultural nuances that define the Canary Islands. Each day of this week-long celebration will focus on a unique theme, including:
- Cultura y raíces: Exploring the foundational aspects of Canarian identity.
- Tradiciones y sabores: A deep dive into the rich culinary heritage and traditional flavors of the Islands.
- Gastronomía: Emphasizing the importance of food as a cultural touchstone.
- Cultura y tradición: Highlighting the customs that continue to shape the Canarian lifestyle.
- Ambiente festivo: Creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration that encapsulates the spirit of the event.
Throughout this week, residents and visitors will have the opportunity to participate in numerous workshops, talks, and activities tailored for all ages.
The Grand Day of Celebration
Culminating the week’s festivities will be the ‘Día grande’, an event set in the vibrant Plaza Pública of El Cotillo. Beginning at 10:00 AM and boasting a plethora of activities, this day promises excitement and engagement. Attendees are invited to join in the Gran Baile Popular Canario, scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM. The response has been overwhelming, with reservations for tables filling up quickly.
Another highlight of the day will be the Concert of Canto al Trabajo, presented by the Tenerife-based company Pieles de Laboratorio. This performance serves as an homage to our ancestors and their laborious contributions, whether in agriculture or household duties. In a true spirit of celebration, awards will also be given for the best table decoration and for individuals adorned in traditional Canarian attire.
Commercial Activities and Community Engagement
Following the cultural festivities, La Oliva will host the ‘Semana Canaria ¡Enyesque Comercial!’ from May 20 to May 29, with activities scattered across Corralejo, La Oliva, and El Cotillo. One standout feature will be the Mercadillo Canario, which will host 24 booths dedicated to showcasing local craftspeople and artisans.
As part of its dynamic commercial programming, the municipality will introduce initiatives like “La Ruleta El Tenderete,” designed to incentivize local shopping with a total of €3,000 in gift vouchers to be won. This not only highlights local commerce but also encourages community participation.
The week will also feature workshops focusing on traditional Majorero cuisine, culinary tastings, and competitions such as the goat meat stew contest and the preparation of gofio and pella. Families will delight in children’s activities, artisan workshops, and immersive experiences with traditional games and sports, including salto del pastor and juego del palo. Additional highlights include cultural shows, folk performances, and musical acts, fostering a deep communal spirit.
Voices from Local Leadership
Mayor Isaí Blanco emphasizes the significance of this programming, stating, “This agenda reflects our commitment to our roots, our identity, and our history—elements that we must preserve for future generations.” His words resonate with a desire to safeguard the cultural legacy of the Canary Islands.
David Hernández, the Culture Councillor, adds, “The programming brings together the best of Canarian culture during these special weeks for the municipality, aiming to impart our identity to both locals and visitors.”
Meanwhile, Alexandra Martín, the Councillor for Commerce, reaffirms her dedication to supporting local trade and embracing Canarian identity. “Investing in events like these is investing in our community, our heritage, and our people,” she affirms.
A Cornerstone for Local Development
This rich tapestry of activities solidifies the municipality’s place within the broader insular agenda, fostering a renewed appreciation for Canarian identity, cultural heritage, and local commerce. Not only do these festivities serve to celebrate the unique traditions of the Islands, but they also contribute to the economic development of La Oliva, ensuring the preservation of cherished customs for generations to come.
