A Unique Exhibition on Cetaceans at Fuerteventura Airport
Fuerteventura Airport is currently hosting a unique exhibition on the cetaceans of Macaronesia, a project spearheaded by the Biosphere Reserve with vital support from the Loro Parque Foundation. This exhibition features life-sized inflatable replicas of some of the most iconic species inhabiting the waters around the Canary Islands. Among these impressive models are a 17-meter sperm whale, an orca, Cuvier’s beaked whale, Blainville’s beaked whale, tropical pilot whale, bottlenose dolphin, and common dolphin.
Raising Awareness About Marine Richness
The primary goal of this exhibition is to sensitize the public about the marine wealth of the Atlantic and promote awareness for the conservation of biodiversity in the region. It also aligns with ongoing efforts to create a Marine Biodiversity Sanctuary in the Canaries, a project aimed at enhancing the protection of these unique ecosystems. The initiative not only showcases these magnificent creatures but also serves as a vital educational tool to increase public understanding of marine life.
An Educational Space
The inauguration of the exhibition featured notable attendees such as Marlene Figueroa, the Councillor for Tourism, Biosphere Reserve, and Blue Economy of Fuerteventura, alongside Luis Sáez Avilés, the airport director, and Toni Gallardo, the manager of the Biosphere Reserve. Representatives from both Loro Parque Foundation and Fundación La Caixa joined the event, highlighting their support for this itinerant initiative, which will travel throughout the archipelago.
Marlene Figueroa emphasized that the exhibition is part of Fuerteventura’s Blue Economy strategy, designed to revalue the marine biodiversity and promote environmental education. “This is a call to society for both residents and visitors to recognize the natural heritage that we must protect,” she articulated, acknowledging the importance of public engagement in conservation efforts.
Highlighting Success in Education
Ricardo Fernández de la Puente, the director of Institutional Relations at the Loro Parque Group, highlighted the significant success of this initiative, particularly in the educational domain. Over 8,000 students and teachers have visited the exhibition across various islands, signaling its impact in raising awareness among younger generations.
From Fundación La Caixa, Manuel Monsonis pointed out that such actions align with their social programs aimed at generating a transformative impact in society. This initiative is not only about marine life but also about promoting equality of opportunities and educating communities on environmental issues.
The Canaries: A Biodiversity Hotspot
The Canary Islands are situated in a subtropical region of the Atlantic Ocean, featuring oceanographic and bathymetric conditions that foster a remarkable diversity of cetaceans. The archipelago is recognized as one of the world’s main biodiversity hotspots, with up to 30 species of cetaceans recorded in its waters. This unique setting makes it crucial for local conservation efforts and educational initiatives aimed at preserving this extraordinary marine life.
Inspiring Commitment to Marine Conservation
The exhibition not only aims to dazzle visitors but also seeks to inspire a greater commitment to marine conservation. By fostering a sense of wonder and respect for these magnificent creatures, it encourages the development of initiatives that protect these species within their natural habitats.
The display serves as more than just an attraction; it’s a call to action for everyone who experiences it, underlining the pressing need to safeguard marine biodiversity for future generations.
A Future-gazing Initiative
With the growing recognition of the importance of marine ecosystems, exhibitions like the one at Fuerteventura Airport pave the way for a more informed and proactive approach to conservation. They remind us that each one of us has a role to play in ensuring the survival of our oceans and the incredible life they harbor.
Engage with the Exhibition
Residents and tourists alike are encouraged to visit the exhibition at Fuerteventura Airport, where not only can they appreciate the awe-inspiring sight of these inflatable cetaceans, but they can also engage in a deeper understanding of the need for marine protection efforts surrounding the Canary Islands.
The exhibition truly embodies the ethos of education, conservation, and community engagement, essential elements in the ongoing journey toward a more sustainable future for our oceans.
