OCIO FUERTEVENTURA | The Archaeological Museum of Fuerteventura Promotes Indigenous Culture Among Island Children

Exploring Archaeology at the Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum

The Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura or MAF) is set to host an exciting event for families this coming Saturday, June 21. Titled “¡Misión arqueología! Aventura familiar en el museo,” this workshop, funded by the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage through the “Enseñas Patrimonio” program, aims to bring young participants closer to the rich history of the island and its indigenous cultures.

Connecting Children with Indigenous Heritage

According to a statement from the Cabildo, the goal of such activities is to introduce children to the rock art of the indigenous cultures of the Canary Islands, as well as the historical significance of Fuerteventura. By engaging the younger generation in the region’s cultural heritage, the organizers hope to ensure that the traditions of the “majorera” people remain alive and relevant.

A Day Full of Activities

The day’s events will kick off with a creative activity at 11:00 AM, where children will use paper and cardboard to recreate the stunning rock paintings and engravings from the pre-Hispanic era. This hands-on experience not only stimulates creativity but also encourages a deeper understanding of the ancient art forms that reflect the lives and beliefs of the island’s early inhabitants.

Bringing History to Life

At 12:30 PM, participants will be treated to a theatrical performance featuring historical figures from Fuerteventura’s past. These characters, brought to life by talented actors, will narrate the fascinating stories of the island’s inhabitants. This unique approach creates an immersive educational experience, allowing children to connect emotionally with the history of their home.

Discovering Indigenous Culture

The workshops aim to uncover lesser-known aspects of the indigenous population of the Canary Islands. Topics will include the symbolic significance of various colors, the use of writing and imagery, as well as the celebration of ancient rituals. Such insights encourage children to appreciate the complexities of their cultural heritage.

Registration and Participation

To attend this engaging workshop, prior registration is essential. Interested families can sign up via email at museoaf@cabildofuer.es. Space is limited, with a maximum of 25 participants allowed in the workshops and 50 for the guided tour. Importantly, children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the activities.

Visiting the Museum

For those who wish to explore the pre-Hispanic history of the Canary Islands independently, the Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura welcomes visitors free of charge from Tuesday to Saturday, between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. This makes it easy for families to immerse themselves in the rich archaeological heritage of Fuerteventura at their own pace.

The Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum continues to be a vital resource for heritage education, ensuring that the island’s rich cultural tapestry is celebrated and preserved for generations to come.
