The Works of Majorera Writer Josefina Pla Arrive at the Canary Basic Library

A New Volume in the Biblioteca Básica Canaria: Celebrating Josefina Pla

The Biblioteca Básica Canaria, a beloved anthology of Canarian literature, is set to expand its illustrious collection with an exciting new volume dedicated to the remarkable writer Josefina Pla. Born in 1903 on the small island of Lobos, Pla is celebrated as one of Fuerteventura’s most prominent literary figures, recognized not just locally but also across international literary circles.

Spotlight on Josefina Pla

Josefina Pla’s literary journey spans across four decades during which she penned over 31 stories. The newly released volume will include a critical study by Ángeles Mateo that delves into Pla’s creative genius and thematic focus. Notably, her works highlight the lives of Paraguayan women, placing them at the center of her storytelling. This emphasis on women’s experiences offers a rich exploration of identity, culture, and resilience in a country where female voices often go unheard.

Pla’s narratives are not only filled with depth but also bring to light the vibrant language of Paraguay. The book will include a glossary of terms from Guaraní and Yopará—an interesting linguistic blend resulting from the fusion of Spanish and Guaraní. This inclusion serves to enrich the reader’s understanding and appreciation of the cultural context surrounding Pla’s work. Even though she lived a significant part of her life in Paraguay, Pla’s heart remained tethered to her Canarian roots, identifying herself as majorera.

New Additions to the Collection

Alongside the volume dedicated to Pla, the Biblioteca Básica Canaria will also incorporate two additional titles: La hora silente by Hilda Zudán and De un sabio antológico by Juan José Delgado. With these new entries, the collection now boasts volumes numbered 74, 75, and 76. This expansion reflects a commitment to showcasing diverse voices and narratives from the archipelago, fostering a deeper connection to Canarian culture through literature.

Launch Event at the Telde Book Fair

The launch of these new titles is slated to take place on April 18th at the Telde Book Fair. The presentation will commence at 12:00 PM and will be hosted by Victoriano Santana Sanjurjo, the director of the Biblioteca Básica Canaria, alongside the esteemed philologist José Miguel Perera. The event promises to be a vibrant celebration of Canarian literature, and entry is free until capacity is reached. Following the Telde event, the presentation will continue on May 8th at the Lanzarote Book Fair and May 9th at the Santa Lucía de Tirajana Book Fair, ensuring that more readers can engage with these significant works.

Evolution of the Biblioteca Básica Canaria

Founded in 1988, the Biblioteca Básica Canaria has always aimed to curate essential works that reflect the diverse narrative tapestry of the Canary Islands. This new phase of the collection is marked by a refreshed design and a stronger emphasis on anthologies. Each volume is thoughtfully accompanied by preliminary studies, bibliographies, and tailored chronologies crafted by literary specialists, enhancing the reader’s journey through the archipelago’s literature.

In tandem with the physical publications, the Government of the Canary Islands is also championing the digital dissemination of the Biblioteca Básica Canaria. Through its website and the bibliotecadecanarias.org platform, the aim is to make Canarian literature more accessible to the public, fostering a continuous rhythm of publication that honors the rich literary tradition of the islands.

An Invitation to Explore

This exciting addition to the Biblioteca Básica Canaria not only honors the legacy of Josefina Pla but also reaffirms the importance of literary voices across generations. The work, scholarship, and cultural insights embodied in these volumes invite readers to explore the nuanced narratives that emerge from the Canary Islands, enriching their understanding of both the local and global literary landscape.
