Public Works announces the opening of the Corralejo to Lajares highway in November.

Final Phase of the New Motorway between Caldereta and Corralejo

The eagerly awaited construction of the new motorway linking Caldereta and Corralejo is entering its final phase. This significant infrastructure project promises to enhance both connectivity and safety for residents and visitors alike. As work progresses, partial openings of the roadway are set to facilitate the completion of the remaining segments.

Key Milestones Ahead

This November marks a crucial milestone for the project, as the first partial opening of the new route between Corralejo and Lajares is scheduled. By the end of the year, another segment from Lajares to Caldereta will be partially opened as well. A key feature of this development is a change in traffic regulations that will divert heavy vehicles southward along the new motorway. This strategic shift is expected to significantly ease congestion on the existing coastal road, which has been a longstanding concern for local commuters.

Coordination and Oversight

A recent coordination meeting underscored the collaborative efforts behind this project. It was attended by Ornella Chacón, the Canary Islands’ Minister of Public Works and Transport, and Marcial Morales, the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, along with other key officials, including Vice President Blas Acosta, Director General of Road Infrastructure José Luis Delgado, and Insular Councillor of Infrastructure Edilia Pérez. Representatives from the construction companies involved were also in attendance, ensuring that everyone is on the same page regarding project timelines and expectations.

Planned Openings and Traffic Management

Chacón provided insight into the carefully crafted project timeline, stating that “the scheduling of the work has been well-studied and reasonable.” Full opening of the Caldereta-Corralejo motorway is projected for mid-2024, backed by sufficient funding allocated in the upcoming budget draft.

Morales echoed the need for ongoing collaboration, emphasizing the frustrations experienced by locals: “We, as majoreros, have been waiting for years for a dignified road that enhances internal movement and stimulates economic activity.” This sentiment reflects a broader community desire for improved infrastructure that meets modern needs.

In November, the partial opening of the Corralejo-Lajares stretch will feature a dual carriageway akin to the present road but built to modern standards. Meanwhile, work will continue on developing the second lane of the road. Toward the end of the year, the Lajares-Caldereta section will also open partially, with a two-lane configuration designed for one-way traffic heading south. Importantly, this section will be open to all vehicles but will specifically cater to heavy traffic destined to Puerto del Rosario, particularly from Corralejo’s busy port.

Traffic Decongestion and Safety Enhancements

The implications of these developments are significant. The Ministry highlights that shifting heavy traffic away from the coastal route will not only alleviate congestion but also enhance safety on the existing roadways. By redirecting trucks and heavy vehicles southward, the project aims to create a safer environment for all users of the road while facilitating smoother transit through the region.

Midway through the next year, the full opening of the Caldereta-Corralejo motorway is anticipated, promising ongoing improvements in both travel efficiency and safety for residents and visitors to Fuerteventura alike. This infrastructure enhancement is emblematic of the region’s commitment to modernizing its transport networks and supporting economic development through improved connectivity.
