Updates from Puerto Rosario: Changes in Local Governance and Infrastructure

In a recent statement, Mayor De Vera addressed the ongoing operations of the Local Police, clarifying that they will not abandon the Town Hall completely. “The Local Police will never cease to be present at the Town Hall of Puerto Rosario,” De Vera emphasized. He elaborated that there will be a reorganization of services designed to maintain a police presence at the municipal headquarters while simultaneously developing new specialized units.

Reimagining Urban Public Transport

On the topic of public transportation in Puerto Rosario, the mayor confirmed that there are no plans for a new tender to reinstate Bus Line 1. Instead, the municipal strategy is to modify the existing 3S line to accommodate the previously missed stops, particularly in areas like Playa Blanca and Majada Marcial.

De Vera defended the decision by highlighting the shortcomings of the former Line 1, which had over 40 stops, infrequent service intervals of over an hour and forty minutes, and attracted fewer than 100 daily passengers. In stark contrast, the revised Lines 2, 3, and 3S have significantly increased daily demand, serving over 900 users daily, with monthly totals reaching between 22,000 and 24,000.

The Town Hall has already communicated its proposal for the 3S line’s expansion to the contracting company and is eagerly awaiting their feedback regarding the feasibility of the enhanced service.

Educational Infrastructure Developments

Another focal point in De Vera’s vision for the municipality is the allocation of land for educational infrastructure. The Town Hall has made available over 20,000 square meters for new facilities and expansions of existing educational centers. Among the locations identified is a plot adjacent to the IES Santo Tomás de Aquino and IES San Diego de Alcalá, where plans for a new educational center are already underway.

De Vera stressed that the aim of the municipality is to ensure it does not become a limiting factor in the development of educational facilities. The proactive approach reflects comprehensive planning that has been in motion since the beginning of the current mandate.

Collaboration for Public Housing

This collaborative spirit extends to public housing as well. De Vera indicated the availability of more than 20,000 square meters of public land, jointly owned by the municipality and the Cabildo, earmarked for housing development. He discussed various initiatives, including the official protection of projects on Don Quijote Street, the conditions on Cisneros Street, and the rehabilitation of 136 houses, along with properties known as Rosa flats, which belong to the ICAVI.

The mayor asserted that Puerto del Rosario has been diligent in its efforts to make land accessible and facilitate urban viability, paving the way for essential developments like the upcoming Palacio de Justicia. He detailed how the project has already been presented and is pending a contract award to commence earthworks.

Addressing the Case of Yaiza Sotorrio

The interview also touched upon a significant legal issue concerning Yaiza Sotorrío, following the Supreme Court’s confirmation of the conviction of former councilor José Juan Herrera Martel for ongoing sexual harassment. De Vera expressed “the utmost respect” for Sotorrío and the judicial process, acknowledging that the decision validates Sotorrío’s position.

Furthermore, the mayor noted that this development opens avenues for administrative litigation against the municipality regarding Sotorrío’s dismissal. He assured that the Town Hall would comply with the determinations of legal services and judicial resolutions in addressing the situation.

Looking Ahead

As Puerto Rosario embraces these multifaceted changes in governance and infrastructure, the administration under De Vera is poised to address various community needs, exhibiting a commitment to enhancing public services, educational facilities, and judicial integrity.
