Celebrating Creativity at Cinedfest 12: A Showcase of Young Talent
The vibrant festival of Cinedfest 12 recently culminated in Fuerteventura, shining a spotlight on the dynamic world of short films. The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the short film ‘La Favorita,’ crafted by students and faculty of the Escuela de Arte de Fuerteventura. It proudly clinched not only the First Prize but also the award for Best Direction. This remarkable achievement was just one facet of an array of accolades garnered by the school, showcasing an impressive tradition of creativity and storytelling.
A Tapestry of Awards
The celebration was not limited to ‘La Favorita.’ The Escuela de Arte de Fuerteventura also received the Third Prize for ‘Tik Lock,’ illustrating their comprehensive talent across various genres. Other commendations included awards for Best Actor for ‘Bucle,’ Best Photography for ‘Match,’ and Best Sound for ‘Patricia.’ Each of these films reflects a distinct narrative style and artistic vision, painting a rich picture of the creative landscape within the school.
In addition to the success of the Escuela de Arte, the IES La Oliva secured the Second Prize with their film ‘Aquí no hay quien alquile.’ This humorous take on the challenges faced by a new teacher in finding affordable housing struck a chord, resonating with audiences through its clever storytelling. Notably, the CEIP Valles de Ortega received a Special Mention for ‘El hada del cole,’ a poignant narrative on the significance of helping others during challenging times, infused with magical elements to connect with younger viewers.
The Ceremony
The awards ceremony, hosted at the Auditorio Insular de Fuerteventura, saw a gathering of cultural luminaries, including Nereida Calero, the councilor of the Fuerteventura Film Commission, alongside other esteemed figures such as the councilor of education, Adargoma Hernández, and the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera. The event was masterfully presented by the local filmmaker and educator Juanjo Neris, who emphasized the commitment to nurturing talent among the island’s youth.
A Growing Festival
Cinedfest continues to excel as an educational initiative, reaching out to students from Infantil to Bachillerato, as well as adults in various educational settings. Since its inception, the festival has become a platform where audiovisual education meets a competitive film festival environment. This year, the festival witnessed participation from 325 short films, of which 21 were crafted by local talent from Fuerteventura, contributing to a remarkable total of 442 films submitted from various regions, including 74 from the mainland and 40 internationally.
Individual Honors
Alongside the major awards, individual honors were bestowed to outstanding contributors. Best Script went to ‘El club de las palabras perdidas’ from the CEIP María Castrillo García, illustrating the power of words against bullying through a secretive children’s club. Best Actor was awarded to Ángel Pérez for his compelling performance in ‘Bucle,’ where his character grapples with the aftermath of a traumatic event. Concurrently, Karen Mondragón López received Best Actress for her portrayal in ‘Ojalá,’ encapsulating the anxieties of a student preparing for a crucial presentation.
Both ‘Match’ and ‘Patricia’ from the Escuela de Arte de Fuerteventura earned accolades for Best Photography and Best Sound, respectively, further showcasing the multifaceted talent present within the school.
