Celebrating the Inaugural Flight of the Corralejo International Kite Festival 2022

The air was filled with excitement as the Corralejo International Kite Festival 2022 kicked off against a backdrop of clear blue skies, gentle temperatures, and ideal wind conditions. This joyous event took place at the renowned Grand Beaches of Corralejo, with key figures in attendance including the mayor of La Oliva, Pilar González, along with Jessica de León, the Tourism Counselor of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and Marcelino Umpiérrez, the Tourism Councilor of La Oliva.

A Grand Opening

Mayor Pilar González had the honor of officially launching the festival by holding the enormous panda-shaped kite that signaled the start of the festivities. She expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “This festival embodies everything La Oliva has to offer visitors.” With elements of wind, sand, dunes, and crystal-clear waters, along with breathtaking views towards Isla de Lobos and Lanzarote, the festival encapsulates the essence of Corralejo.

Tourism and Economic Impact

Marcelino Umpiérrez echoed the importance of the festival, remarking that it serves as a spotlight for La Oliva to the many countries from which kite enthusiasts originate, notably Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and The Netherlands. He highlighted the festival’s timing in November, as a strategic promotional opportunity, attracting visitors from regions experiencing colder temperatures. “Monetarily, the impact we receive from this promotion is invaluable,” he added, emphasizing the economic benefits that the festival brings to the area.

A Colorful Display

Following the inaugural flight, the skies over Corralejo were adorned with hundreds of kites, ranging from small, acrobatic designs to massive kites exceeding 15 meters in length. Colorful characters from children’s stories, whimsical dragons, giant octopuses, romantic hearts, and even fierce-looking sharks took to the air, creating a vivid tapestry of colors and shapes that delighted spectators.

Engaging the Local Community

The festival not only serves to entertain but also fosters community engagement. Local schools from La Oliva, Lajares, Villaverde, Bernabé Figueroa, María Castrillo, Tindaya, and Parque Natural Corralejo brought 234 children to participate in a unique kite-flying experience. These students reveled in the joy of flying their own kites alongside skilled kite enthusiasts, embodying the festival’s inclusive spirit.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, the festivities promise to continue delighting attendees with thrilling displays of acrobatic and static kites. One of the most anticipated events includes the Rokaku battles, where kite flyers will engage in friendly competition. Spectators can expect vibrant displays to continue filling the skies at the Grand Beaches starting from 10:00 AM tomorrow.

In summary, the Corralejo International Kite Festival serves not just as an exhilarating spectacle but also as a vital promotional tool for tourism in La Oliva, reinforcing the region’s natural beauty and community spirit. It’s a vivid celebration that enchants both locals and visitors alike, highlighting the joy and creativity inherent in kite flying.
