Solar Eclipse Sparks Significant Increase in Bookings Throughout Spain and Iceland

Flight Demand Rises 25% Year-on-Year from 2025 as Eclipse Tourism Drives Short Breaks and Boosts Solo Travel

New data from Amadeus Travel Intelligence reveals a remarkable surge in travel demand ahead of the total solar eclipse set to occur in August 2026. This celestial event, the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain in over 120 years, is generating significant interest among travelers, particularly in regions along the eclipse path, such as Spain and Iceland.

Increased Flight Bookings

Flight bookings to airports situated along the eclipse path for arrivals between August 7 and August 12, 2026, have seen a striking 25% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This data, sourced from Amadeus Air Visitors, underscores the growing enthusiasm for destinations that promise optimal viewing experiences of this rare astronomical phenomenon.

Rising Hotel Demand

The excitement surrounding the eclipse is translating into tangible benefits for the hospitality sector. Data from Amadeus Demand360® for the week of August 9 to August 16, 2026, indicates that hotel occupancy rates across Spain and Iceland have risen by 16% year-on-year. Additionally, travelers are willing to spend more on accommodations, with the Average Daily Rate (ADR) increasing by an impressive 36%.

Key Destinations

Travelers are gravitating towards specific locations known for their exceptional eclipse viewing opportunities. Notable destinations experiencing the most significant growth in bookings compared to 2025 include:

  • Bilbao: +366%
  • Asturias: +292%
  • Valencia: +137%

The international demand for eclipse travel is diverse, with travelers from the USA, Japan, Argentina, and Canada leading the charge in long-haul travel to these prime viewing spots.

Short Trips and Solo Travel on the Rise

The data also reveals evolving travel patterns, with many travelers planning dedicated trips around the eclipse. Short stays, defined as trips lasting between one and five days, have surged by 57% compared to the previous year. This trend indicates that visitors are intentionally aligning their travel dates with the eclipse.

Interestingly, 40% of travelers heading to eclipse destinations are in pairs, marking an 18% increase from 2025. This suggests a strong demand for shared experiences among couples and travel companions. Meanwhile, solo travel is experiencing a remarkable growth of 48%, reflecting a rising interest in independent and experience-led journeys.

Influence of Lunar Eclipses

The excitement surrounding major astronomical events appears to influence travel behavior well in advance. Notable spikes in booking activity were observed during September 2025, coinciding with a total lunar eclipse and the widely visible ‘Blood Moon’ phenomenon. Another spike occurred in March 2026, during a total lunar eclipse visible across North America, the Pacific region, Australia, and parts of East Asia.

Lunar Eclipse

“Travelers increasingly seek experiences that feel unique and memorable, and major natural phenomena can create powerful motivations to travel. Short, high-intensity demand spikes present a clear opportunity for destinations and hotels. Data-driven insights support providers to anticipate booking patterns and adjust pricing strategies dynamically so they are best positioned to maximize revenue and can explore the capabilities to personalize and deliver the best experience for these travelers.”

A Bright Future for Eclipse Tourism

The international interest in the upcoming eclipse is already palpable. The total solar eclipse in Spain, along with subsequent eclipses in 2027 and 2028, positions the country as a leading astronomical destination in the coming years. This “Trio of Eclipses” is expected to enhance the visibility of regions and tourism products linked to astronomy, extending beyond the event itself. It aims to promote inland destinations and rural areas as ideal settings for new experiences in nature, science, and cultural tourism, thereby contributing to a more balanced distribution of tourist flows across Spain.

“The total solar eclipse we will experience in Spain this year — which will be visible almost exclusively from Spain — along with those in 2027 and 2028, positions our country as the world’s leading astronomical destination in the coming years.”
Miguel Sanz, General Director at Turespaña
