The 2026 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition: A Green Milestone

The 2026 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (2026MIECF) recently concluded, marking a significant milestone in global environmental cooperation. Hosted by the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region, this year’s event showcased a remarkable increase in participation and engagement, solidifying Macao’s role as a pivotal hub for green development.

A Surge in Participation and Agreements

Over the three-day event, nearly 30 thematic activities took place, attracting a 20% increase in international exhibitors and participants compared to the previous year. The forum facilitated more than 460 business matching sessions, leading to the signing of over 60 cooperation agreements—an impressive 30% rise year-on-year. These outcomes underscore MIECF’s effectiveness as an international platform, enabling enterprises to explore global business opportunities in the environmental sector.

Keynote Insights from Leading Experts

One of the highlights of the event was the keynote speech delivered by He Kebin, a prominent professor at Tsinghua University and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. His address focused on “Dual Carbon Initiatives and Zero Waste City Development.” He provided a comprehensive overview of China’s “Zero Waste Cities” initiative, offering practical insights and policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the synergy between solid waste management and the dual carbon strategy.

Thematic Sessions and Expert Contributions

This year’s “Green Forum” revolved around the theme “Low-carbon, Zero Waste Cities: Embarking on a Global Collaboration.” It featured four thematic sessions with nearly 50 experts, scholars, and industry leaders from diverse regions, including the Chinese mainland, Portuguese-speaking countries, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Discussions covered a range of topics such as ecological civilization, waste management systems, green finance, and regional environmental cooperation, fostering a rich exchange of industry experiences and forward-thinking strategies.

Innovative Green Technologies on Display

The Green Showcase was another significant aspect of the event, occupying an impressive 12,000 square meters. It featured three themed exhibition zones: the “Zero-waste Circular Economy Exhibition Zone,” the “Green Mobility Zone,” and the “Green and Low-carbon Project Zone.” Attendees were introduced to over 500 innovative green technologies and solutions, highlighting the latest advancements in environmental sustainability.

Strengthening International Ties

To bolster cooperation between Macao and Portuguese-speaking countries, as well as to promote integrated industrial development between Macao and Hengqin, the event included four Macao–Hengqin “multi-venue” activities. These sessions attracted over 230 representatives from various sectors, including international environmental organizations and green financial institutions. Community tours were also organized, allowing participants to explore Macao’s Zona Nova de Aterros do Porto Exterior (ZAPE) and gain firsthand insights into the region’s business environment.

Positive Feedback and Future Prospects

Exhibitors and participants expressed high levels of satisfaction with the event’s organization and outcomes. Many reported exceeding expectations in terms of green cooperation results. Notably, Macao’s green financial institutions hosted professional forums attended by over 180 enterprises, further establishing Macao as a bridge for international green and low-carbon cooperation. For instance, a Brazilian digital financial enterprise is planning to develop innovative technologies in Macao to enhance green cross-border transactions between China and Brazil.

Engaging the Local Community

The final day of the event was designated as “Green Public Day,” offering free admission to residents. This initiative attracted a large audience eager to participate in environmental education activities, gaining insights into the latest environmental technologies. Technical visits to the Cotai Ecological Zones and the Macao Refuse Incineration Plant facilitated interactive exchanges on environmental technologies, enhancing community awareness and engagement.

Investment Opportunities on the Rise

The Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) successfully leveraged the exhibition to attract investment, introducing Macao’s business advantages to over 170 enterprises. As a result, 35 enterprises from Brazil, Portugal, and the Chinese mainland expressed intentions to invest in Macao, representing a 60% increase from the previous year. Among these, 15 enterprises have already initiated or completed the necessary procedures to establish operations in Macao, focusing on environmental protection technologies.

A Legacy of Environmental Cooperation

Since its inception in 2008, MIECF has evolved into a vital platform for environmental exchanges and cooperation at both regional and international levels. The event received support from various Chinese governmental bodies, reinforcing its significance in promoting green development. As Macao continues to advance its green cooperation initiatives, it remains committed to fostering a sustainable future through collaboration with international partners.
