A New Era for Medical Cannabis in Spain: Taima Growth’s Groundbreaking Venture
A Spanish startup, Taima Growth, has recently made headlines by becoming one of only four companies authorized by Spain’s medicines regulator, the Agencia Española de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios (AEMPS), to cultivate medical cannabis. This significant achievement positions Taima to supply export markets in the UK and Germany from its state-of-the-art indoor facility located in the Ribera region of Burgos.
The Journey to Authorization
Taima Growth’s path to obtaining its cultivation license was not a straightforward one. After more than seven years of rigorous development, the company finally received the green light from AEMPS. This lengthy process required Taima to establish pre-agreed contracts with authorized importers in target countries, assemble a qualified technical team, and ensure that its facilities met stringent compliance standards.
Mo Alyasini, the founder and Chief Executive of Taima, expressed the challenges faced during this journey, stating, “The process has been very difficult, but we have achieved it.” This determination reflects the commitment and resilience that the team has shown in navigating the complex regulatory landscape surrounding medical cannabis.
Preparing for Commercial Sales
Before Taima can commence commercial sales, it must validate three production batches that demonstrate full homogeneity and consistency in line with AEMPS standards. This validation is crucial for ensuring that the products meet the high-quality expectations of pharmaceutical buyers. Once cleared, Taima plans to export dried cannabis flower to importers in the UK and Germany, which are currently the two largest established markets for medical cannabis in Europe. Notably, these countries already account for the majority of Spain’s licensed cannabis production.
Investment and Infrastructure
To date, Taima has invested over €3 million into the project, with funding sourced from Spanish investors who have backgrounds in agriculture, renewable energy, and financial services. The company meticulously selected its facility after evaluating more than 200 potential sites across Spain. The chosen location features a fully controlled indoor environment where lighting, temperature, humidity, and nutrient delivery are continuously monitored and automated.
This advanced setup allows Taima to support three to five harvests per year, ensuring the batch-to-batch consistency that is essential for pharmaceutical buyers. Alyasini emphasized the company’s focus on quality over quantity, stating, “Our objective was never to become the biggest producer. We wanted to build one of the highest-quality cultivation platforms in Europe.”
Building a Skilled Team
Currently, Taima employs six specialists, including quality and production managers with international experience from countries like Uruguay and Portugal. As the company moves closer to completing batch validation, it anticipates expanding its workforce to approximately ten employees. The management team has set an initial production target of around 1,250 kg annually, with aspirations to scale up to nine tonnes in the long term.
Regulatory Landscape in Spain
It’s important to note that Spain currently restricts the domestic dispensation of cannabis to compounding pharmacy formats. On June 9, 2026, Secretary of State for Health Javier Padilla confirmed before the Senate’s Joint Commission on Addiction that the legalization of recreational cannabis is “not, by any means, in the plans.” The government’s focus remains on the existing framework established by Royal Decree 903/2025, which underscores the regulatory challenges that companies like Taima must navigate.
