Restoring the Historical Charm of Betancuria
Nestled in the heart of Fuerteventura, Betancuria, a little village steeped in history, is undergoing a vibrant transformation. The façades of its historic buildings, traditionally adorned in beautiful añiles (a vivid blue) and granates (a rich red), are being meticulously restored. This project reflects a commitment to preserving the unique charm and identity of this picturesque locale.
Government Support and Funding
The renovation initiatives are financially backed by the Consejería de Turismo y Empleo del Gobierno de Canarias, which has allocated significant funds for the enhancement and rehabilitation of the village’s exterior. The project focuses on high-traffic tourist areas, ensuring that Betancuria remains an attractive destination for visitors keen to explore its historical significance.
A budget of 117,701 euros has been designated for this undertaking, part of a broader initiative named “Pueblos más bonitos de España en Canarias” (Most Beautiful Villages of Spain in the Canary Islands). This program underscores the importance of maintaining the aesthetic and cultural heritage of rural communities.
A Historic Agreement
In January of this year, a landmark cooperation agreement was signed between the Government of the Canary Islands and various municipal entities part of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Spain” network. This particular agreement, the first of its kind in Spain, was signed in Betancuria, emphasizing the village’s unique value and the ongoing efforts for its preservation and promotion.
Héctor Mateo, the director general of Infrastructure, Sustainability, and Quality Tourism, noted that this event was not merely coincidental. The agreement symbolizes recognition for the historical and cultural significance of Betancuria, which has long been viewed as a jewel of Fuerteventura.
Continuous Commitment to Preservation
Mateo Castañeyra highlighted the ongoing and steadfast commitment of the regional government towards Betancuria, with an annual investment of 100,000 euros for the “Villa Capital Histórica de Canarias” initiative. Additionally, another 100,000 euros are funneled into the “Most Beautiful Villages of Spain in the Canary Islands” program each year. This sustained support showcases a dedication to preserving the village’s rich heritage while enhancing its historical value.
In 2024, further investments amounting to 293,021 euros will be dedicated to improving the recreational area and walking path of Vega de Río Palma. Looking ahead to 2025, an additional 86,500 euros will be directed towards drafting plans for an eco-friendly lodge, illustrating a push toward sustainable tourism.
A Collaborative Effort
As part of the restoration endeavors, various stakeholders, including local government officials and architects, have been involved in planning and executing these critical enhancement projects. The team displayed in a recent public gathering included Jessica de León, the Canary Islands’ tourism advisor, Enrique Cerdeña, the mayor, and Tino Medina, the municipal technical architect. Their collective vision aims to not just restore the façades but also to invigorate the community’s historical identity and appeal.
Through these ongoing efforts, Betancuria is poised to not only maintain its historical integrity but also bring new life to its streets, welcoming both residents and tourists to experience its enduring beauty. The focus on vibrant colors and historical aesthetics serves as a celebration of the village’s past while looking toward a sustainable future.
