The trains of Recebe strengthen the dirt road network in Jandía and Antigua after completing work on Corralejo–El Cotillo

Fuerteventura’s Commitment to Road Rehabilitation: The Role of “Trenes de Recebe”

On November 25, 2025, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura revitalized its ongoing initiative to rehabilitate unpaved roads across the island. This new phase of work focuses on the picturesque regions of La Punta de Jandía and the municipality of Antigua. This effort follows the successful completion of improvements along the coastal route linking Corralejo with El Cotillo, done in cooperation with the local council of La Oliva.

Importance of the Initiative

This road rehabilitation program is part of a sustained maintenance effort that ensures the extensive network of dirt roads on the island remains in good condition year-round. According to the island’s president, Lola García, maintaining these roads is vital for ensuring mobility and accessibility. García highlighted the continuous hard work of the teams involved, stating that they are dedicated to keeping the roads in optimal condition throughout the year.

The Impact of the Project

The Councilor for Works and Machinery, Blas Acosta, emphasized the essential nature of these rehabilitative works. Given that a considerable portion of Fuerteventura’s road network consists of unpaved routes, these interventions serve both local residents and tourists. Acosta noted that maintaining these dirt paths is crucial for sustaining road communications internally and for connecting urban points with places of interest for tourists. He reaffirmed the necessity of caring for the state of these roads to enhance residents’ quality of life while also guaranteeing a positive experience for visitors.

Current Activities on the Ground

On this particular day, one of the trenches de recebe (road rehabilitation trains) began its work at the Morro Jable cemetery, progressively moving along the road network leading to La Punta de Jandía. Simultaneously, another team was active in different paths within the municipal area of Antigua, executing the planned works in collaboration with the local authorities.

Continuous and Rotational System

The Cabildo operates a continuous and rotational work system, ensuring that the trenching and rehabilitation trains cover the entire island in a consistent cycle. This method allows the dirt road network to maintain acceptable driving conditions despite regular vehicle traffic and natural factors like rain and wind. Each pass of the rehabilitation trains effectively eliminates the irregularities that affect road safety and usability.

Coordination with Local Governments

Moreover, the Cabildo underscored the importance of coordinating with local municipalities to enhance the effectiveness of these projects. The synergy between public resources and shared planning enables results optimization, accelerating responses to the needs of rural paths and access routes to significantly visited tourist and socially relevant areas.

By continually caring for its unpaved roads, Fuerteventura not only supports the day-to-day life of its residents but also ensures a smooth and enjoyable experience for those exploring its beautiful landscapes, making these infrastructural efforts crucial for both community and tourism.
