The Federación Española de Baloncesto (FEB) has made headlines recently after imposing a three-year suspension and a fine of €1,440 on Gonzalo Guerra, a player from CB Los Toscones Corralejo. This severe punishment stems from an incident during a match held on October 14 against Probasket Fuenlabrada, where Guerra aggressively assaulted one of the referees.
<p class="article-text">
This incident triggered a considerable response from the basketball community, as the attack was classified as a “very serious” infringement according to Article 36-a of the FEB's Disciplinary Regulations. The referee, Roger Pinyol, was assaulted following a foul call against Guerra. Reports indicate that Guerra pushed Pinyol, causing him to fall, and then proceeded to stomp on his chest—a shocking act that goes against the very spirit of sportsmanship.

The aftermath of this incident created more turbulence as Guerra was reported to have hurled insults at Pinyol, saying phrases like, “you are a son of a b****.” The violent confrontation led to Pinyol receiving treatment both immediately after the match at a nearby healthcare facility and later, upon returning to Tenerife, at another medical establishment. This not only highlights the physical danger posed by such aggressive behavior but also the mental toll on officials in the sport.

<p class="article-text">
The sanction received by Guerra is in line with the regulations set forth by FEB, which stipulate suspension lengths ranging from two to four years for such misconduct. The actual duration of his suspension could extend beyond three years, especially considering Article 15 of the same regulations excludes “months during which there is no official competition” from the suspension timeline. This means Guerra's opportunity to participate in federated competitions will be severely affected in the long run.

<p class="article-text">
Regarding the monetary fine, the Committee deemed it appropriate to set a lower amount than the minimum of €3,005 outlined in Article 36-a of the regulations. They exercised discretion based on the specific circumstances of the incident, which allows them to impose a fine that fits the situation at hand. It serves as a necessary reminder that financial penalties in sports misconduct cases can vary significantly and depend on the context of the violation.

<p class="article-text">
An additional layer to this tense situation is the presence of two individuals from the audience who accessed the court unauthorized after the assault, one of whom identified themselves as Guerra’s mother. Reports indicate she joined in the verbal assault against the referee, uttering threats such as “I’m going to finish you.” This escalation reflects not only a failing in personal conduct but also raises questions about crowd behavior at sports events and its implications for player and official safety.
