Over 270 enthusiastic participants, comprising 110 women and 146 men, descended upon the scenic venue, hailing from various regions across Spain—Toledo, Madrid, Sevilla, and Barcelona—as well as from European nations like the United Kingdom and Germany.
A Vibrant Atmosphere
The day was not only defined by the sheer number of eager athletes but also by the overwhelming support from family and friends. The scenic avenue of the Corralejo harbor overflowed with spectators, everyone there to cheer on the swimmers as they embarked on their aquatic journey. The event presented a picture of camaraderie and enthusiasm, creating lasting memories for both participants and supporters alike.
Challenging Conditions, Unyielding Spirits
Despite the tough conditions encountered in La Bocaina, the strait separating Isla de Lobos and Fuerteventura, every swimmer successfully reached the finish line, with smiles that illuminated their fatigue. “I could really use some fresh water after all that saltwater!” one swimmer exclaimed, capturing the whimsical spirit of the day. The atmosphere was further enlivened by the dynamic beats of the Bloco Da Ilha samba band, coupled with Zumba routines led by Fuerteventura instructors, and vibrant tunes from DJ Joe Valdivia. This festive ambiance underscored the event’s blend of athleticism and enjoyment.
A Showcase of Talent
In the competitive realm, Tomás Carrascosa from Club Nadamas claimed victory in the male category with an astonishing time of 43 minutes and 9 seconds. Close on his heels were Daniel González and Raúl Fernández, both representing Club Tridan Danysport, who secured second and third places respectively.
On the female side, Sarai Del Pino Afonso shone bright, completing her race in 52 minutes and 9 seconds. She was followed by Erika Rivero and Carla López from Club Salinas de Santa Lucía, who placed second and third respectively. Their accomplishments highlighted the diverse talent showcased at the event.
Stars Among Us
The event was graced by the presence of European champion and third-place global swimmer Arancha Aranega, and an inspiring 82-year-old participant, Mauricio Zanahan, proving that passion for swimming knows no age limits. The inclusion of young swimmers, with some as young as 15, signals a promising future for this iconic event, ensuring that the spirit of swimming continues to thrive on the island.
