Measles Alert: What UK Holidaymakers Need to Know
As holidaymakers prepare for their trips to popular destinations like Spain, a concerning health warning has emerged regarding a resurgence of measles cases in Europe. Recent figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that countries in Europe and Central Asia reported nearly 34,000 measles cases in 2025, a significant decline from previous years. However, 2026 has seen a worrying uptick in cases, with several fatalities reported, raising alarms for travelers.
The Current Situation
In February 2026, the most recent month for which data is available, 11 EU countries reported a total of 139 measles cases. The highest numbers were recorded in Italy (63 cases), Spain (36 cases), France (16 cases), and Poland (5 cases). Alarmingly, a third of these cases involved children under five, with infants being particularly vulnerable. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) confirmed six deaths attributed to measles in the year leading up to February 2026, with four occurring in France, one in the Netherlands, and one in Romania.
Understanding Measles
Measles is an acute, highly contagious viral disease that can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can remain airborne for up to two hours, making crowded places like public transport and offices hotspots for transmission.
Pharmacy Superintendent Niamh McMillan emphasizes the importance of early detection and vaccination. “Measles can have serious health consequences, especially for young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems,” she warns.
Vaccination: The Best Defense
The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) is the most effective way to protect against measles. It provides long-term immunity and is recommended for both adults and children. The vaccine is administered in two doses for full protection. In the UK, Superdrug’s nationwide clinics offer the MMR vaccination for £45 per dose, with appointments available online.
Despite the availability of vaccines, the uptake has declined in some communities, contributing to the resurgence of measles cases. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported nearly 500 confirmed cases of measles in England alone in 2026, with children aged 10 and under accounting for two-thirds of these cases.
Symptoms to Watch For
Recognizing the symptoms of measles is crucial for early intervention. The illness typically begins with cold-like symptoms, which can make it difficult to distinguish from other common illnesses. Key symptoms include:
- High Fever: Often one of the earliest signs, starting around 10-12 days after exposure.
- Cough, Runny Nose, and Sore Throat: These symptoms can mimic a cold and usually accompany the fever.
- White Spots Inside the Mouth: Known as Koplik spots, these may appear a few days before the rash.
- Rash: The most recognizable symptom, the rash usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body, appearing three to five days after the initial symptoms.
If you or your child exhibit signs of measles, it’s essential to seek medical attention immediately. If diagnosed, staying at home and avoiding contact with others is crucial to prevent further spread.
The Bigger Picture
The resurgence of measles is not limited to Europe. The UK has seen a steady increase in cases since the beginning of 2026, with 477 laboratory-confirmed cases reported between January 1 and April 27. The figures for April are expected to rise due to reporting delays, and London has accounted for the majority of these cases.
Despite the alarming rise in infections, no deaths linked to measles have been reported in England this year. However, health officials continue to stress the importance of vaccination as the most effective means of preventing outbreaks.
As holidaymakers plan their trips, it’s vital to stay informed about health risks, including the resurgence of measles. Ensuring that you and your family are vaccinated can help protect not only your health but also the health of others during your travels.
