Fuerteventura Celebrates ‘May 100% Canarias’ with Over Forty Events and Activities

Celebrating Canarian Culture: El Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s ‘Mayo 100% Canarias’ Program

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Culture Department, has launched an exciting initiative titled ‘Mayo 100% Canarias.’ This vibrant program features over forty events and activities designed for everyone, celebrating the island’s unique identity and cultural richness. According to Lola García, the insular president, this programming aims “to celebrate who we are and to highlight our traditions, artistic expressions, and cultural diversity.”

A Diverse Array of Activities

The ‘Mayo 100% Canarias’ program encapsulates a wide variety of activities that span multiple disciplines. Elements of music, dance, theater, exhibitions, literature, and even lectures focusing on Canarian identity are meticulously curated for audiences of all ages. Running throughout the month of May, this extensive calendar of events is organized by the Culture Department and involves various aspects of Fuerteventura’s cultural offerings, such as Cultural Heritage, the Insular Library Center, Juan Ismael Art Center, and several museums, including the Archaeological Museum of Fuerteventura. Additionally, the initiative is backed by the Government of the Canary Islands. For a full list of events, you can visit www.culturafuerteventura.es.

Embracing Identity and Traditions

For Lola García, this initiative is not just an event series but a heartfelt celebration of Canarian identity, traditions, and the unique understanding of their land. “We celebrate Canarias from what we are: our identity, our traditions, and our way of understanding this land,” she emphasized. This ethos of honoring cultural heritage is at the heart of the program, aimed at strengthening the attributes that define the Canarian people.

Highlighting Modern and Traditional Canarian Culture

Rayco León, the Culture Councillor, underscored the importance of showcasing “canariedad” in all its forms. This doesn’t just include traditional exhibitions; the program also embraces modern interpretations of Canarian culture, ensuring there are activities suitable for every demographic. It highlights local companies, creators, and experts across various fields, incorporating both established traditions and contemporary art forms.

Engaging with Heritage

A standout component of the programming is the focus on heritage. The project ‘El Alma de la Isla’ includes theatrical routes that unveil the island’s rich patrimonial values, alongside forums meant for reflection, such as informative talks on the participatory process for the rehabilitation and future use of the Casas de La Florida. These engagement efforts are crucial for fostering a deeper understanding of Fuerteventura’s history and cultural significance.

Traditional Dance Workshops

In a delightful continuation from last year, traditional dance workshops will be held from May 18 to May 28, in collaboration with A.F. Maxorata, taking place in Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal. These workshops aim to immerse participants in the island’s traditional dances, offering a unique opportunity to connect with Canarian heritage.

Family-Friendly Events

The programming also includes events tailored for younger audiences, such as storytelling sessions organized by the Insular Library Center. Schools are invited to partake in special activities designed to introduce children to various aspects of Canarian identity. Notable museum visits include the Interpretation Center of Batallas del Cuchillete, Tamasite, Poblado de la Atalayita, and Ecomuseo La Alcogida, as well as the Archaeological Museum, coinciding with International Museum Day on May 18. These initiatives aim to bolster knowledge and engagement among the youth.

Art and Theater

Rayco León also expressed gratitude toward the Government of the Canary Islands for its support through programs like Somos Patrimonio de Canarias and the Canarian Institute of Cultural Development. These collaborations enable theater productions such as Siete Estrellas Verdes and La Casa de Bernarda Alba, as well as musical performances from renowned artists like Los Sabandeños & Olga Cerpa and Mestisay, ensuring a rich array of artistic expression throughout the month.

Culminating Celebration: The Gran Baile de Taifas

As the month draws to a close, one of the most anticipated events will take place: the Gran Baile de Taifas on May 29 at the Puerto del Rosario fairgrounds. Coordinated in collaboration with the local municipality, this event will feature performances from groups across Fuerteventura and the other islands, as well as a clothing exhibition and competition. Reservations for tables will open on May 11, starting at 5:00 PM, making it a must-attend occasion for both locals and visitors alike.

A Month of Celebration

With the ‘Mayo 100% Canarias’ program, Fuerteventura emerges as a vibrant hub for cultural celebration and engagement. It provides a platform to recognize, appreciate, and participate in the rich tapestry of Canarian culture, ensuring that both its history and modern expressions are shared and celebrated among all.
