‘Portraying to Resist’: Gender-Focused Photography Arrives in Fuerteventura

The Power of Female Narratives: Exploring “Retratar para Resistir”

Introduction to the Exhibition

In a world where aesthetic and social pressures weigh heavily on women, tackling issues of violence, invisibility, and the lack of time due to overwhelming responsibilities is essential. These themes serve as the backbone of the inspiring photographic exhibition “Retratar para Resistir” (Photographing to Resist). This itinerant show, born from workshops focusing on gender perspective and diversity, has made its way to Fuerteventura, courtesy of the Government of the Canary Islands. Over the coming weeks, it offers a sanctuary for reflection and dialogue surrounding the female experience.

The Journey of the Exhibition

“Retratar para Resistir” first made its mark in Gran Canaria, showcasing the collective talent and vision of women who participated in the workshops facilitated by the Unidad de Igualdad y Diversidad of the Instituto Canario de Desarrollo Cultural (ICDC). The exhibition will now find its home at the Casa de la Cultura in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, officially opening its doors on May 27 at 19:00. Open to the public with free admission, the exhibition invites all to engage with its poignant content until June 26, before moving on to its final destination in Lanzarote.

A Deeper Look into the Workshops

The workshops that inspired “Retratar para Resistir” took place in late 2025 across several islands in the archipelago. They provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on how women—especially those in vulnerable groups—are portrayed and examined the narratives that often go unchallenged. Organized safely for women and gender-diverse individuals, these workshops were led by three talented professionals in the fields of photography and art:

  • Asiria Álvarez, a graphic designer and photographer with a strong gender perspective,
  • Nadia Martín, a journalist and social activist,
  • Adriana Sandec, a visual artist and photographer.

Together, they nurtured a creative space where participants could develop their skills and express complex emotions through photography.

Artistic Expression and Community Dialogue

The title of the exhibition encapsulates its aim: “Retratar para Resistir: Fotografía participativa con enfoque de género e interculturalidad.” It presents a rich tapestry showcasing gender, bodies, and diversity, all deeply intertwined with the ideas and emotions expressed by the workshop participants. Each photograph acts as both a narrative and a panel of discussion, exploring the contradictions and realities faced by women in society.

Through participatory photography, the women involved have contributed not just to the exhibition but also to the cultural enrichment of their communities. Each artwork invites viewers to dialogue with the community, challenging normative standards and broadening the definition of inclusivity. The exhibition provides a unique lens through which visitors can engage with the often-silenced stories of diverse individuals.

Itinerant Nature of the Exhibition

Maintaining its spirit of mobility, “Retratar para Resistir” is set to illuminate the island of Fuerteventura until June 26. After that, it will transition to the Centro Sociocultural de La Vega in Lanzarote, where it will run from July 8 to August 28. This itinerant journey is emblematic of the exhibition’s broader mission: to amplify voices and to foster ongoing conversations about gender, diversity, and the lived experiences of women.

Invitation to Reflect and Engage

In a time when it is crucial to confront societal expectations and to challenge the status quo, “Retratar para Resistir” serves as an important reminder of the power of photography as a tool for resistance and empowerment. It encourages viewers to look beyond superficial portrayals and to engage with the nuanced realities faced by women today. The exhibition stands as a beacon of hope, inviting all to reflect, question, and ultimately support the ongoing fight for a more inclusive society.
