Puerto del Rosario Restores Public Housing Development with 47 New Protected Homes

The Canary Islands Government has laid the first stone of a new development of **47 protected homes in Puerto del Rosario,** located in Fuerteventura. This initiative marks a significant revival of public housing construction in the municipality after over a decade of stagnation in protected housing projects.

During his speech, Rodríguez underlined that Puerto del Rosario had not seen any new public housing projects in many years, emphasizing that this initiative represents a crucial step towards addressing that gap.

He highlighted that the Don Quijote housing project is essential to restore public policy aimed at ensuring access to housing. This project evidences the commitment of the Canary Islands Government to reinvigorate public housing construction, allocating six million euros via the Canary Islands Housing Institute to facilitate its progression.

Collaboration Between Agencies

María Jesús de la Cruz praised the collaboration among state, regional, and local administrations, which is vital for enabling the construction of these homes. She acknowledged that both the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura face a significant housing deficit, but underscored that projects such as this one represent the necessary progress to meet the existing demand.

Adding to this, Lola García, President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, remarked on the investment of **53 million euros** that the island institution is directing towards enhancing housing infrastructure across the island. She explained that this collective effort will yield 176 homes in various municipalities, including the 47 homes currently under development in Puerto del Rosario, facilitated by land transfer from the Town Hall.

García emphasized that the Cabildo will continue to collaborate with other municipalities to extend housing policies throughout the island while also addressing rehabilitation needs of the existing housing stock.

Mayor David de Vera expressed that the initiation of this project is a long-awaited development for many families in the municipality who require access to decent housing. He noted that the laying of the first stone signifies a commitment to expanding the public housing stock and addressing a primary concern for the community.

De Vera further highlighted that this promotion will consist of modern, accessible, and energy-efficient homes designed to meet the current needs of residents, thereby enhancing the quality of life in Puerto del Rosario.

Modern, Accessible, and Efficient Homes

The new housing project will be located on Don Quijote, Sorolla, and Dulcinea streets in Puerto del Rosario, with a total investment of **6,816,577.85 euros** allocated for the construction.

Funding will be sourced from various public administrations: **257,047.06 euros** will come from the European MIVAU-PRTR-Next Generation funds; **6,194,941.03 euros** from the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands; and **449,597.73 euros** from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. Additionally, professional fees will total **203,091.50 euros**.

The building will offer homes with one to four bedrooms, including one six-bedroom unit counted as a three-bedroom home. Furthermore, two units will be specifically adapted for individuals with reduced mobility.

Additional features of the development will include parking spaces, storage rooms, and fully equipped kitchens in every home. Moreover, the project will achieve an energy certification of A for energy consumption and CO₂ emissions, reinforcing the commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.

The new initiative not only aims to meet the immediate housing needs but also embodies a sustainable vision for the future of Puerto del Rosario, prioritizing environmental considerations without sacrificing quality or accessibility.
