Fuerteventura’s Sustainable Future: A Major Waste Management Initiative
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura has taken a significant step towards enhancing waste management on the island by awarding a contract worth 3.6 million euros to the company Prezero Gestión de Residuos. This initiative aims to improve the management and transportation of waste across three transfer plants and four clean points, crucial for maintaining the ecological integrity of the beautiful island.
Enhancements to the Waste Management Strategy
What sets this contract apart are the additional improvements proposed by Prezero. These enhancements are not only about efficiency; they also emphasize the importance of community engagement and sustainability. A notable feature of their plan is a campaign for training and awareness, aimed at educating residents on proper waste disposal practices. This initiative underscores a growing recognition that effective waste management extends beyond operational efforts—it involves inspiring communities to participate actively.
Renewable Energy Initiatives
In a commendable move toward eco-friendliness, Prezero has committed to incorporating renewable energy solutions in its operations. For instance, the lighting systems at the clean points and transfer plants will utilize solar energy, significantly reducing the reliance on non-renewable sources. Moreover, a photovoltaic plant is set to be established at the clean point in Lajares, further solidifying Fuerteventura’s commitment to green energy.
Infrastructure Improvements
The contract also encompasses various infrastructure upgrades. This includes replacing open containers, which can lead to litter and unsightly conditions, with more effective solutions. Additionally, the project entails executing road resurfacing, which not only improves accessibility but also enhances safety for residents and visitors alike.
Collaboration with Local Entities
One of the most socially responsible aspects of this contract is the plan to transfer textile waste to social economy entities. This collaboration will not only help reduce the overall waste that the island generates but also foster local economies by supporting organizations that operate in the recycling and repurposing sectors, promoting a circular economy model.
Duration of the Contract
The contract has a duration of three years, with an option for two annual extensions. This flexible timeframe allows for adjustments and enhancements as needed, encompassing a potential total period of up to five years to ensure that the project’s objectives are thoroughly met.
Existing Facilities on the Island
Fuerteventura is already equipped with several clean points located in strategic areas: Lajares (La Oliva), Risco Prieto (Puerto del Rosario), Tuineje, and Mal Nombre (Pájara). These facilities play a critical role in the sustainable waste management strategy, allowing residents to dispose of various types of waste responsibly.
Furthermore, the transfer plants in Lajares, Tuineje, and Mal Nombre facilitate the efficient collection of household waste. These facilities consolidate waste before it is transported to the complexo ambiental de Zurita, a hub designed for comprehensive waste treatment and environmental management.
Fuerteventura’s proactive approach to waste management demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and community involvement. By integrating renewable energy, enhancing infrastructure, and proposing educational programs, the island is paving the way for a more eco-conscious future.
