The XXIV Travesía a Nado: A Celebration of Sport and Community in Corralejo

Today marked a significant occasion in the world of open water swimming as the XXIV edition of the Travesía a Nado de Isla de Lobos took place in Corralejo, Fuerteventura. This year’s event saw a record number of participants, showcasing the growing interest in this insular sport. Organized meticulously by the CD Herbania and Club Charco Herbania Atlético, and supported by the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva and the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, the event brought together swimmers from diverse backgrounds, united by their love for the sport and the beautiful waters of the Canary Islands.

A Perfect Day for Swimming

Under optimal conditions, swimmers plunged into the sea, ready to tackle the challenging 3,400 meters that separate the charming Isla de Lobos from the stunning shores of Corralejo. As the sun shone brightly overhead, participants not only met but often exceeded their personal bests, making the day even more memorable.

The race featured some impressive performances, with Jorge García Moreno leading the men’s category and clinching victory with a stunning time of 37:27. He was followed by Álvaro Cabrera Winter and Daniel González Fernández, securing second and third places with times of 40:46 and 41:18 respectively. In the women’s category, Elena Sarmiento Guerra crossed the finish line first at 44:46, closely pursued by Sarai del Pino Afonso González and Ainhoa Santana Flores who timed in at 45:00 and 45:43.

Kickoff for a Competitive Series

The Travesía a Nado also served as the inaugural event for the VI Copa de Canarias de Aguas Abiertas. In this first leg of the series, Iker Hernández Calderón from the Club CD Teneteide took top honors in the men’s category, while Elena Sarmiento Guerra (who had a remarkable day) topped the women’s category, solidifying her competitive edge.

A Community Spirit

Inma Díaz, the president of the Club Deportivo Herbania, expressed her pride in the event, emphasizing how each year’s organization of the Travesía excels beyond expectations. “Thanks to our collaborators and sponsors, this event is possible,” she noted, highlighting the charitable aspect of this year’s edition dedicated to raising funds for the AECC in their fight against cancer. This illustrates the profound community spirit that permeates the event.

Recognition from Local Authorities

The significance of the Travesía a Nado was echoed by Gleiber Carreño, the sports councilor of the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva. Carreño remarked on the event’s evolution over 24 years into a key sports attraction, enhancing the area’s appeal as both a sporting and tourist destination. He extended gratitude to CD Herbania for once again choosing La Oliva as the host for this remarkable swim.

A Festive Atmosphere

The day wasn’t simply about competition; it was also a celebration of sport and community spirit. Lola García, the president of the Cabildo Insular de Fuerteventura, alongside Sports Councillor Luis González, expressed their delight at the large turnout and vibrant atmosphere accompanying the event. Such gatherings not only cultivate a love for sport but also play a pivotal role in boosting tourism and community engagement within the island.

As the cannon fired to signal the start of the event, it wasn’t just a race; it was a gathering that celebrated dedication, resilience, and the breathtaking beauty of Fuerteventura. The Travesía a Nado de Isla de Lobos continues to inspire both seasoned athletes and newcomers alike, promising more thrilling editions in the years to come.
