Happy and Musical: 20 Editions of the FEM in El Cotillo

Catalina García

This coming weekend, the stunning La Concha beach in El Cotillo, La Oliva municipality, will transform into a vibrant cultural hub for the much-anticipated Fuerteventura en Música (FEM) festival. Celebrating its twentieth edition, FEM has solidified its status as one of the most cherished cultural events in the Canary Islands.

During a customary visit to oversee the setup of stages and kiosks, Fuerteventura’s Cabildo President, Lola García, expressed her excitement: “Everything is ready for Fuerteventura to once again enjoy one of the island’s and Canarias’ most beloved cultural events. The Fuerteventura en Música festival has improved with each passing year while maintaining its essence as a meeting space for cultures through music, all set against the beautiful backdrop of La Concha beach.”

Cultural Councillor Rayco León emphasized that this year’s festival will unite artists from various countries and musical styles, “featuring a program that focuses on quality, diversity, and local talent. It’s a festival that invites attendees to explore new music and has established itself among the major cultural events in the Canary Islands.”

The La Oliva Town Council is also enhancing safety measures, deploying additional personnel, establishing an advanced Local Police command post, and installing new surveillance cameras. Juan José Rodríguez, the Economy Councillor, assured that attendees can enjoy the festival “with complete peace of mind.”

This year’s edition holds special significance as it will pay tribute to Dania Dévora, the visionary behind the Fuerteventura en Música festival, whose commitment to musical diversity, sustainability, and respect for the territory helped elevate FEM to a cultural landmark.

On Friday, July 3, attendees will enjoy performances from artists including Marta Umpiérrez, Chanela Clicka, La Sra. Tomasa, Femi Kuti & The Positive Force, and Eskorzo, with DJ Woodhands curating music between sets and for the festival’s closing.

Saturday, July 4, will feature an exciting lineup with performances by Arife, Queralt Lahoz, Kumbia Boruka, Antonio Carmona, and Pongo, again with DJ Woodhands providing the soundtrack to the evening.

Additionally, the programming includes daytime activities through a special initiative called FEM de Día, thanks to the efforts of Cotillo Joven. This will enliven the streets and public spaces of El Cotillo with workshops and musical performances, featuring artists and groups such as Papaya Subtropical, Naby Zana Band, Hey Chabón, and Chocolate Sexy, alongside the African Percussion Association of Fuerteventura and the batucada Corumba.
