As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, sustainable initiatives are on the rise.
The Town Hall of Fuerteventura is set to enhance its selective waste collection program by introducing 470 new side-loading containers, backed by an investment of €709,227 funded through European Next Generation funds, coordinated by the Government of the Canary Islands’ Tourism Department.
This initiative aims to significantly bolster the island’s recycling infrastructure. Of the new containers, 235 will be allocated for the collection of light packaging, while the remaining 235 will cater to paper and cardboard. Installation of these containers will occur progressively alongside the rollout of a new service contract for selective waste collection, which is currently under preparation.
With this expansion, the total number of side-loading containers on the island will increase from just over 1,300 to approximately 1,800, marking an impressive rise of over 35% in the capacity for selective collection.
Enrique Pérez, the insular Waste Councillor, emphasized that this investment is crucial for providing a more efficient service aligned with the island’s population growth and the rising volume of recyclable waste. Additionally, he indicated that the new contract will enhance resources to improve the service across all municipalities.
As part of these improvements, the plan includes adding two new side-loading trucks, which will facilitate service expansion and optimize waste collection routes throughout the island.
Fuerteventura has been recognized for its outstanding progress in recycling. Recent data from the Cabildo shows that it is the leading island in the Canary archipelago for increased collection of light packaging and paper and cardboard in recent years. It also ranks first in glass recycling, reflecting a positive trend.
Pérez attributed the island’s success to both governmental initiatives and active citizen participation. “The impressive results achieved by Fuerteventura are the result of community commitment. Our administration is dedicated to providing the necessary resources to ensure that selective collection continues to grow, steering us towards a more sustainable island model,” he stated.
