In an important development for the educational landscape of Fuerteventura, the Consejería de Educación, Formación Profesional, Actividad Física y Deportes, led by Poli Suárez, has awarded the contract for the design of the new Centro de Educación Infantil y Primaria (CEIP) of El Cotillo. This new school, located in the municipality of La Oliva, marks a significant step towards addressing the long-standing demand for improved educational facilities in the northern part of the island. The approval of this project echoes the persistent requests from the local educational community for a modern infrastructure that can meet the needs of its growing population.
The awarded contract, valued at over €110,000, is expected to span a four-month period focused on formulating a comprehensive plan for the future educational center. Designed to cater to the demographic and educational growth seen in recent years, the proposed CEIP El Cotillo will feature 13 educational units. This includes one unit for the first cycle of early childhood education, three units for the second cycle, and nine for primary education. Importantly, the design also incorporates specialized spaces aimed at supporting students with specific educational needs, ensuring an inclusive environment for all learners.
The future infrastructure is envisioned as a substantial upgrade from the current modular classrooms, which lack the necessary facilities for a conducive learning environment. The new school promises to be modern, accessible, and adaptable, designed with the latest pedagogical requirements in mind. It aims to provide educational spaces that foster innovative teaching methodologies and better living conditions for the entire educational community in El Cotillo.
In discussing the project, Iván G. Carro, the Director General of Infrastructure and Equipment, expressed his enthusiasm about the decision, stating, “With this contract award, we are making headway on a project long awaited by the families of El Cotillo and the entire educational community, which has for years called for facilities that are commensurate with the growth experienced in this northern region of Fuerteventura.” His remarks underscore the urgency of this initiative and its significance for local families who have been advocating for enhanced educational opportunities.
Carro also emphasized that the project’s scope allows for a modern and accessible center, replacing temporary facilities with well-designed spaces conducive to learning and community engagement. This move is not merely a reaction to immediate demands but part of a broader vision for sustainable educational development in the region.
Strategic Infrastructure Plan
The initiative for the CEIP El Cotillo aligns with the Education Infrastructure Strategic Plan 2024-2035, launched by the Consejería. This ambitious plan outlines approximately fifty projects spread across the entire archipelago, with a total investment of around €235 million. Specific to Fuerteventura, this plan encompasses various projects dedicated to modernizing and expanding the public educational network. The overarching goal is to adapt educational facilities to the island’s demographic evolution, thereby enhancing both teaching and learning environments for students.
Key projects already underway or completed include the transformation of CEIP El Ciervo into the Centro Integrado de Formación Profesional (CIFP) Morro Jable, as well as the expansion of schools such as Tarajalejo, Francisco Navarro Artiles, and Gran Tarajal, along with the CIFP Majada Marcial. These developments reflect a commitment to not just maintaining but enhancing the educational framework to ensure it meets the needs of a rapidly changing population.
As El Cotillo gears up for its new educational center, the community anticipates a brighter future filled with enhanced learning opportunities. This project stands as a testament to the determined efforts of families and educators advocating for better resources and facilities—showing that change is indeed on the horizon.
