The Seed Network of the Fuerteventura Council Takes Center Stage at the 5th Somos Digital 2026 Meeting

Innovation and Connectivity from Fuerteventura

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has taken a bold step toward the future by reaffirming its commitment to technology and social inclusion. This commitment was vividly demonstrated at the 5th Somos Digital 2026 Meeting held at the Fundación Telefónica in Madrid. Under the compelling slogan “Digital Wellbeing: A Shared Responsibility”, the event attracted over 150 experts to collaborate on defining a digital training strategy for the next four years.

Leading the delegation from Fuerteventura was the counselor of New Technologies, Carmen Alonso, who was accompanied by a technical team from the Cabildo and facilitators from the Semilla Network of municipalities, including Tuineje, Antigua, and La Oliva. This group highlighted the essential role of the Semilla Network within the Somos Digital Association, emphasizing that it does more than provide internet access; it actively fosters learning in areas such as artificial intelligence, electronic administration, and digital security.

A New Strategic Direction

An important aspect of the meeting was the transition of leadership in the Somos Digital Association, which shifted from Castilla y León to the Andalusian network, Puntos Vuela. With the backing of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, the association approved its Strategy 26-30, focusing on promoting digital wellbeing and advocating for the critical and safe use of technology. This new direction seeks to bridge the geographical divide by strengthening centers in rural areas—a goal that resonates deeply with the Semilla Network’s mission in less populated regions of the island.

Empowering Communities Through Technology

By engaging with local municipalities, the Cabildo is not merely adopting new technologies but is also striving to empower communities. The Semilla Network, serving as a vital resource, is designed to educate citizens on how to harness the power of technology responsibly. Workshops and training sessions on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity are not only promoting digital literacy but are also set to change the lives of residents by enabling them to navigate the digital landscape confidently.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

While the move towards greater digital inclusion is commendable, it is essential to recognize the various challenges ahead. Access to technology can be uneven, affecting not only urban but also rural areas. The initiative aims to ensure that even the most remote communities in Fuerteventura can benefit from technological advancements. Investing in infrastructure, providing adequate training, and fostering a culture of innovation will be critical in overcoming these hurdles.

Network of Collaboration

The 5th Somos Digital 2026 Meeting emphasized collaboration among municipalities, businesses, and educational institutions. By fostering partnerships, communities can share resources and best practices, ultimately enhancing their digital frameworks. This collaborative spirit is vital for the long-term sustainability of digital initiatives and reflects a modern commitment to inclusive growth.

Future Impact on Local Economy

The initiatives discussed at the meeting are expected to have a positive impact on Fuerteventura’s local economy. As residents become more digitally literate and connected, new opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and innovation will arise. The focus on technology not only enhances individual capabilities but also positions Fuerteventura as a leader in digital inclusion among the Canary Islands.
