An Unprecedented Success: The 37th Corralejo International Kite Festival

The 37th edition of the Corralejo International Kite Festival has come to a spectacular close, marking an extraordinary week in Fuerteventura, where the skies were illuminated with the vibrant colors and graceful movements of thousands of kites from around the world. This year’s festival, held in the breathtaking Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park, not only showcased artistic displays but also fostered community spirit and environmental awareness.

Embracing Diversity

Over 80,000 visitors flocked to the festival, drawn by numerous events that celebrated kites and their artistry. Among the highlights were breathtaking flights featuring nearly 1,000 kites that danced through the sky daily, captivating all who watched. The sense of unity among attendees—families, seasoned kite fliers, and enthusiastic tourists—was palpable. The mission of the festival to promote culture, tourism, and environmental consciousness resonated strongly, as noted by David Fajardo, the Municipal Tourism and Environment Councillor.

Engaging Activities for All Ages

The festival was not just limited to kite aficionados. More than 700 local students and multiple senior residents from La Oliva participated in activities specifically designed for them. Workshops, guided visits, and interactive booths attracted hundreds, ensuring that the spirit of kite flying was shared across generations. The festival team ensured that the experience was both educational and entertaining, fostering a deeper appreciation for this colorful art form.

A Night to Remember: Drone Spectacle

This year’s festival introduced an awe-inspiring nighttime drone show, featuring 220 drones that captured the imagination of thousands as they synchronized to create stunning three-dimensional shapes. Spectators were treated to spectacular visuals of dragons, mermaids, castles, and even a pirate ship. The event culminated with tributes to the locale of Corralejo and its beloved kites, and also paid homage to Valencia, leaving the audience in spirited applause.

Highlighting Environmental Consciousness

Amidst the colorful chaos of kites and drones, an underlying theme of environmental awareness was woven throughout the festival. As shared by David Fajardo, the promotion of Fuerteventura as a responsible tourism destination captured the attention of visitors. Many came because they had been enchanted by images from previous years, reflecting the festival’s growing status as a must-visit event.

Raúl Rivero, the festival promoter, expressed his satisfaction with the outcomes, noting the diverse representation of kite fliers from new nationalities, which only enhances the festival’s rich tapestry of participation. The event stands as a testament to careful planning and an effort to connect with attendees on multiple levels.

Kite Battles and Awards

The final day of the festival saw the thrilling conclusion of kite battles, particularly the iconic Rokaku battles held on the stunning beaches. This event not only tested the skills of seasoned kite competitors but also showcased camaraderie as fliers celebrated each other’s achievements. The award ceremony, attended by local dignitaries, served as a reminder of the festival’s objectives—to honor the tradition of kite flying while celebrating community involvement and environmental mindfulness.

Organizers and Supporters

The Corralejo International Kite Festival is organized by the Tourism Department of La Oliva, with support from various organizations, including the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Government of the Canary Islands through Promotur Turismo. The backing from local businesses such as Binter and RIU Hotels and Resorts further signifies the collaboration and community spirit that the festival has fostered over nearly four decades.

In essence, the festival serves as a beacon of creativity, showcasing kites as vehicles of joy, art, and community engagement while emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship. Each year, it invites attendees not just to gaze at the skies but to participate actively in the unfolding narrative of cultural richness and ecological awareness that is Fuerteventura.
