With just a week to go before the much-anticipated Insular Craft Fair kicks off on May 1, 2025, the Town Hall of Antigua has excitedly announced the recipient of the prestigious Insular Craft Prize for this year.

Spotlight on Bianca Scarpari
This year’s award goes to artisan Bianca Scarpari, an accomplished practitioner of “almazuelas” sewing. Originally from Venice, Bianca has spent the last two decades in Fuerteventura, a beautiful island that has profoundly influenced her creative designs. By expertly combining fabric pieces, she crafts stunning quilts, tapestries, and table linens that emanate warmth and artistry.
The Insular Craft Fair: An Artisan’s Haven
From May 1 to May 4, the plaza and streets of Antigua will be transformed into a vibrant cultural hub, showcasing the island’s most significant artisans. Bianca Scarpari will be in attendance, sharing her unique creations with the community and visitors alike. Over the years, she has been a consistent presence at the Insular Craft Fair, dedicated to showcasing her original designs and evident craftsmanship.
Bianca’s work is characterized by its quality, bold colors, and elegant textures, meticulously crafted in her workshop in Tuineje. Her reputation as an artisan lies not just in her skills but in the emotional and cultural narratives her creations evoke.
A Celebration of Diversity in Craftsmanship
The 36th Insular Craft Fair promises to be an enriching experience, bringing together nearly 200 artisans from the Canarian Islands. This vibrant gathering will feature craftspeople specializing in a wide array of materials and techniques including leatherwork, pottery, silk and wool embroidery, wood carving, glasswork, and silver crafting, among others. This eclectic mix of disciplines displays the rich cultural tapestry of Fuerteventura and the broader Canary Islands, offering a glimpse into the varied artistic expressions found throughout the region.
Acknowledging Excellence and Humility
The Town Hall of Antigua has highlighted Bianca Scarpari’s humility and grace, in stark contrast to her vivid, intricate designs. Matías Peña, the mayor, alongside Nereida Brito, the president of the Mafasca Collective Foundation, will present the award to Bianca during the fair. This recognition not only honors her talent but also her dedication to her craft and the community.
