2.7 Million for La Oliva, Lajares, and El Cotillo to Prevent Water Outages

Ensuring Water Security in Northern Fuerteventura

In the picturesque landscapes of Fuerteventura, the towns of Lajares, Majanicho, El Roque, and El Cotillo can now breathe a little easier, thanks to significant developments in water management. The Morro Francisco pumping station, situated near Corralejo in the municipality of La Oliva, has become a pivotal part of a comprehensive water supply strategy. This initiative, spearheaded by the Consortium for Water Supply in Fuerteventura (CAAF), involves a substantial investment of €2.7 million.

Decentralizing Water Supply

One of the key objectives of this project is to decentralize the water supply, reducing the dependency on the Puerto del Rosario station for these northern locales. With the new infrastructure in place, residents can expect a more reliable source of water, which is crucial for both everyday life and economic activities in the region.

The Role of Desalination

The Corralejo desalination plant has taken a central stage in this narrative, with its impressive production capacity of 5,000 cubic meters of potable water daily. This translates to an astounding annual output of approximately 1,825,000 cubic meters of desalinated water, according to figures released by CAAF. This quantity not only underscores the plant’s importance but also highlights the growing reliance on desalination technology, especially in arid regions like Fuerteventura, where freshwater resources are scarce.

Enhancing Overall Water Quality

The integration of the Morro Francisco pumping station with existing infrastructure, including the Puerto del Rosario network, promises to enhance the overall water supply quality and accessibility in La Oliva’s various communities. This collaborative approach will ensure that more residents benefit from improved services, which is vital for supporting both health and local economies.

A Vision for Sustainable Water Management

The Morro Francisco project is part of a more extensive hydrological planning initiative approved by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura in August 2023. Financed partially through Fdcan funds, this project aligns with sustainable water management goals aimed at enhancing services and infrastructure across the island.

Community Impact

Adargoma Hernández Rodríguez, the Water Counselor for the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, emphasizes the importance of these developments. “These enhancements in our networks and the volume of desalinated water will provide a more efficient and higher-quality water supply,” he notes. The focus remains squarely on improving services for the community, ensuring that residents in Lajares, Majanicho, El Roque, and El Cotillo have access to the resources they need for their daily lives.

Through these strategic investments and initiatives, the future of water supply in northern Fuerteventura appears brighter, promising a more resilient and responsive system. The ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure underscores a shared vision of sustainability and community well-being for residents of this vibrant region.
