Enhancing El Cotillo’s Fishing Infrastructure: A Call for Urgent Action
Mario Cabrera, a member of the Gran Canaria Nationalist Group (CC), has taken a significant step by urging the Parliament’s committee to expedite the execution of the necessary improvements at the El Cotillo fishing refuge. His request underscores the importance of equipping the fishing sector with suitable infrastructure, particularly in a location with such a rich fishing heritage.
A Tradition Anchored in Community
During a recent meeting of the Commission on Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty, Cabrera emphasized the crucial nature of this initiative. El Cotillo boasts a deeply rooted fishing tradition that makes the proposed improvements not just beneficial, but essential for the community’s livelihood. By enhancing the facilities, the government aims to sustain and uplift the local fishing industry, which has historically played a vital role in the region’s economy.
Financial Backing for Development
The project specifically comprises a budget allocation of €200,000, a figure integrated into the Government of the Canary Islands’ financial planning for the current year. Cabrera expressed keen interest in learning about the timeline for when the construction work would commence, highlighting the need for transparency and urgency in delivering on this vital commitment.
Responding to Local Needs
Importantly, this initiative aligns with a request from the La Oliva Town Council and represents a commitment made by the area’s Minister, Narvay Quintero, during a sector-specific meeting held in November 2025. This collaborative effort reflects a recognition of the challenges faced by local communities and the imperative to address these through targeted infrastructural support.
Comprehensive Project Outline
The approved project outlines an array of essential improvements: from resurfacing and upgrading the jetty to enhancing the entry points and installing a launching ramp. Additionally, a new diesel tank will be introduced to support both the fishing fleet and recreational vessels, along with improved signage to ensure safe navigation and usability.
The Current Challenges Facing Fishermen
Cabrera articulated the pressing issues currently confronting the fishing sector, which are exacerbated by adverse marine conditions and rising fuel costs. He pointed out the uncertainty tied to European policies, which adds another layer of complexity for those in the industry. “We must ensure the best possible conditions for the development of this activity,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of appropriate infrastructure for safeguarding food sovereignty and supporting traditional artisanal fishing practices.
Urgent Repairs Required
In addition to the overall project, Cabrera called for immediate attention to other critical areas. Specifically, he urged for the removal of debris and the repair of damaged docks, which have restricted the mooring of fishing vessels. In light of recent coastal events, he highlighted the pressing need for these infrastructural upgrades, stating that they would deliver significant improvements for professionals, sports enthusiasts, and general users alike.
Ministerial Promise of Improvement
In response to Cabrera’s calls for action, Minister Narvay Quintero outlined plans for a comprehensive upgrade of the fishing pier. This extensive program will include modifications to enhance protection against maritime conditions. The Minister also mentioned plans to install better lighting, perimeter fencing, and a large 10,000-liter diesel tank, all to support both commercial and recreational activities in the area.
Addressing Delays and Future Plans
While discussing the timeline for these enhancements, Quintero explained that delays have stemmed from the integration of additional improvements into the contract. However, he reassured stakeholders that work would commence before the summer, alleviating some concerns around the project’s timeline.
This ongoing dialogue reflects a shared commitment to revitalizing El Cotillo’s fishing infrastructure, ensuring that both tradition and innovation work hand in hand to foster a sustainable future for the community.
