The proposal calls for the local government to promptly initiate processes to identify and transfer municipal land to the relevant authorities, such as the Government of the Canary Islands or the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. This direct approach aims to facilitate the construction of Officially Protected Housing (Viviendas de Protección Oficial), which is crucial for residents struggling to find affordable housing options.

Enrique Pérez Brito, the spokesperson for AM-CC, articulated the initiative’s necessity by pointing out the unique challenges faced by Betancuria. According to him, “the territorial and demographic peculiarities, combined with soil scarcity and high costs, have hindered any public housing initiatives for years.” His candid acknowledgment of these challenges portrays the urgency behind the motion, as the town grapples with a dwindling population and an increasingly unaffordable housing market.

Prioritizing Affordable Housing for Residents
