Compassion in Action: Supporting Feline Welfare in Antigua
In an inspiring initiative, local volunteer José Ignacio Torrent recently shared insights about the ongoing efforts of a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of street cats in Antigua. Speaking on the program La Voz de Fuerteventura aired on Radio Insular, Torrent highlighted how the organization tirelessly supports feline colonies, particularly in Puerto Castillo.
The Constant Need for Resources
Torrent stressed the ever-present need for resources, stating, “We are always in need of help and funds.” This heartfelt plea underscores the challenges faced by organizations that rely on donations and community support to fulfill their mission. The organization is focused on caring for stray cats, with a special emphasis on the health and wellbeing of the feline population in the area.
A Community of Care
Currently, the organization oversees a colony of 15 to 16 cats in the Puerto area. Torrent detailed how these animals are not just surviving but thriving under community care. “They are all sterilized, and we regularly apply treatments to protect them from parasites,” he explained. This dedicated maintenance includes daily feeding and providing water in specially designed shelters.
Cat Cafés: A Safe Haven
These shelters, creatively referred to as cat cafés, are strategically located throughout Puerto Castillo and even extend to popular nearby spots such as the Centro Comercial Atlántico and surrounding hotel zones. Inside these cafés, volunteers ensure that dry food and fresh water are readily available, fulfilling the basic needs of these street-dwelling cats. It’s a community effort focused on creating a safe environment for cats who would otherwise face harsh living conditions.
Understanding the Feline Crisis
Highlighting a key issue, Torrent remarked that these cats “do not appear out of nowhere” but are often the result of irresponsible pet ownership. Many cats were once beloved pets that were abandoned and left to fend for themselves. This reality speaks to the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need to take thorough actions to mitigate further suffering.
Advocating for Responsible Solutions
In their mission, the organization promotes the idea of sterilization as a fundamental solution. “We advocate strongly for sterilization. That is our fight,” Torrent emphasized. Addressing both indoor pets and feral cats in the community is crucial to managing the cat population and preventing a crisis of overpopulation. Additionally, the organization actively rescues abandoned litters and strives to find them loving homes, highlighting their commitment to animal welfare.
Collaborative Efforts with Veterinary Professionals
To bolster their efforts, the organization collaborates with local veterinarians who provide invaluable support in maintaining the health of the cats. Torrent expressed his gratitude for their commitment, which enhances the welfare of the animals and amplifies the impact of their work.
Community Engagement: Breakfast for a Cause
In an exciting call to action, Torrent invited the community to participate in a solidarity breakfast scheduled for this Sunday at Café Bar El Contraste located on Avenida Príncipe de España, number 10, in Antigua, running from 10:00 to 13:00. This event promises to be both delicious and meaningful, featuring chocolate with churros and artisan craft tables designed to raise funds. All proceeds will go toward supporting the ongoing feeding, veterinary care, and rescue programs essential for the organization’s mission.
By attending and contributing, community members can play a vital role in helping to sustain the organization’s efforts and improve the lives of many cats in need.
