Blossoming Dreams: Madame Butterfly Graces Betancuria
A Night to Remember
Last night, under a canopy of cherry blossoms, the historic village of Betancuria transformed into a poignant setting for one of the most moving operas ever composed—Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. This tragedy tells the story of Cio-Cio-San, a young geisha whose life is intricately woven with themes of love, anticipation, and heartbreak. The enchanting atmosphere of Betancuria served as a fitting backdrop for this emotional narrative.
Cultural Heritage Meets Artistic Expression
The performance, organized by Ópera Fuerteventura as part of the IV edition of Operatria Betancuria and the XI Festival ÓperaFuerteventura, transported the audience back to early 20th century Japan. With a mix of soothing melodies, deep-rooted traditions, and the scent of incense wafting through the air, the ambiance was beautifully curated, complete with meticulous stage design and thoughtful lighting.
Welcome Encounters
As attendees made their way to Betancuria, special shuttles facilitated access to the venue, reflecting an organizational commitment to minimizing environmental impact while maximizing audience enjoyment. Upon arrival, guests were warmly welcomed with local wine and cheese, enriching their experiences before the show even began. Just as the evening sky deepened, the performance commenced, enveloping the audience in an intimate, evocative atmosphere.

An Acclaimed Cast
The performance featured an impressive lineup of talent. Soprano Ximena Agurto took the lead as Cio-Cio-San, while tenor Manuel Valero portrayed Pinkerton, the American naval officer. The role of Suzuki, Cio-Cio-San’s loyal maid, was played by mezzo-soprano María Luisa Bringas, and baritone Christopher Gagliardo graced the stage as Sharpless, Pinkerton’s friend. The cast was further supported by tenor Álvaro Soto and Ana Carmen Jiménez, who played Goro and Kate Pinkerton, respectively.
Enhancing the emotional depth of the performance, the Orquesta Sinfónica Fuerteventura, under the skilled direction of Tulio Gagliardo, delivered Puccini’s score with exceptional sensitivity, making every note resonate with the audience.
A Collective Effort for Artistic Excellence
Artistic director and stage designer José Concepción played a pivotal role in refining the production. Known for his international acclaim, he has solidified Ópera Fuerteventura as a cultural beacon in the region. His direction characterized the production as respectful to the original work, while creatively adapted to resonate with the unique spirit of Betancuria.
Costuming, crafted by Justy Wilber, further enriched the production, adding layers to the visual storytelling and immersing the audience in the emotional landscape of Cio-Cio-San’s life.

Embracing Community Participation
Community involvement was a significant aspect of the production, with local villagers participating in the performance as figurants. This not only enhanced the authenticity of the experience but also reinforced the notion that the opera is a cultural endeavor made by the community and for the community.
The Aim of Ópera Fuerteventura
Under the leadership of Jonatan Suárez, the Asociación Ópera Fuerteventura prioritizes accessibility in the arts. Hosting the opera in Betancuria, particularly in an outdoor setting, serves to transform the event into a shared experience that resonates deeply with both performers and audience members alike. The joy of music emerges in connection, and this production allows it to breathe life into the village.
Notably, the event is free, a truly remarkable aspect for many international attendees accustomed to the high ticket prices of operatic performances elsewhere. This effort, supported by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Betancuria Town Hall, enables a more extensive audience engagement.
A Heartfelt Response
As the performance drew to a close, the audience erupted into thunderous applause, their hearts warmed against the cool night air. Standings ovations filled the venue, countless individuals touched by the poignant tale of Madame Butterfly. The historic village had been momentarily transformed into a Japanese neighborhood, showcasing the incredible power of art to bridge cultures and evoke deep emotions.
