Upcoming Health Infrastructure in Fuerteventura: A Promising Future

Groundbreaking Developments on the Horizon

Anticipation is building in Fuerteventura as the construction of the Corralejo II Health Center is set to begin, likely before the summer of 2026. This significant project is currently navigating the final stages of the bidding process, as confirmed in a recent meeting between crucial figures in the local government. Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and Esther Monzón, Canaries’ Health Minister, discussed the roadmap for healthcare in the region, indicating a robust future for health services on the island.

The strategic planning session wasn’t just a two-person affair; it also saw the participation of influential stakeholders including the director of the Insular Health Area, Tomás Pérez, and the island councilor for health matters, Víctor Alonso. They were joined by María Naranjo, the manager of health services in Fuerteventura, along with representatives from various municipalities and political parties represented in the local government.

A Response to Demographic Growth

The establishment of the Corralejo II Health Center aims to enhance primary healthcare services in the northern part of Fuerteventura. This initiative comes at a time when the island has experienced substantial population growth, necessitating upgraded healthcare infrastructure to meet the increasing demand. President Lola García emphasized that this new health facility responds to a long-standing need, the result of seamless coordination between the Cabildo, the Canary Islands Government, municipal authorities, and the Health Area.

To further bolster healthcare services across the island, there’s an ambitious infrastructure plan valued at €3.4 million. This initiative is designed to strengthen the primary care network in all municipalities, ensuring that healthcare is both accessible and efficient.

Specialized Care for Southern Regions

Among the multiple projects lined up, the development of the La Lajita Specialized Care Center (CAE) stands out as a priority. The project documentation is currently under bidding review, and once completed, it will predominantly serve the southern region of the island. This initiative will alleviate the challenges of healthcare access, particularly in areas characterized by vast distances between population centers.

Enhanced Emergency Medical Transport

A notable advancement in urgent healthcare services is the introduction of a medical helicopter, which is expected to take flight by the end of March. This helicopter will provide coverage not only for Fuerteventura but also extend its services to Lanzarote and La Graciosa, thus improving response times for inter-island emergencies.

During the meeting, there were discussions surrounding the necessity of bolstering urgent medical transport services, with plans to introduce two additional life support ambulances to the fleet. This enhancement will ensure that emergency care meets the rising demands of the local population effectively.

Innovations at the General Hospital

Local authorities also took the opportunity to visit the General Hospital of Fuerteventura, where they observed the recent launch of the Home Hospitalization Unit (HADO). This innovative service has already assisted 13 patients by providing medical and nursing care in the comfort of their homes, serving as an effective alternative to hospital admissions.

Esther Monzón highlighted the progressive reinforcement of hospital staff since June 2023, which has seen the addition of 66 new professionals, including specialists in various medical fields. This expansion has positively impacted healthcare delivery, evidenced by a 15% reduction in the surgical waiting list and a notable decrease in the average waiting time for surgeries from 80 days to 53 days.

A Comprehensive Healthcare Strategy

The overarching health strategy outlined during the meeting reflects a series of initiatives aimed at expanding and improving healthcare resources available to the people of Fuerteventura. As the island continues to grow, so too does the recognition of the urgent need for enhanced healthcare services. By addressing this demand through strategic planning and community engagement, health authorities are laying the groundwork for a healthier future for all residents.
