Improvements Underway for the FV-10 Road in Fuerteventura
The landscape of Fuerteventura is set to witness significant infrastructural enhancements, as El Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Insular Area of Infrastructure, Planning, Roads, and Territorial Organization, has embarked on an essential project to rehabilitate the FV-10 road. This crucial stretch, which spans 5.30 kilometers from the roundabout leading to Lajares to El Roque, is currently undergoing a much-needed makeover. The initiative was recently visited by President Sergio Lloret López and Second Vice President Claudio Gutiérrez on August 6.
Investment and Scope of Work
This ambitious project comes with a hefty investment of €977,127 dedicated to road surfacing and rehabilitation. These works are not limited to mere asphalt application; they also encompass vital drainage improvements aimed at enhancing the road’s capacity to manage water runoff, particularly during heavy rainfall events in the Barranco del Jable area.
Addressing Long-Standing Issues
The roadwork aims to resolve “one of the significant problems that we faced in this region,” as highlighted by President Lloret López. Previous drainage systems were prone to overflowing during substantial downpours, causing frequent disruptions and safety issues. “This is an essential improvement that has been a long time coming. After years of waiting, we have managed to expedite this process to bring it into service as soon as possible,” he elaborated.
Traffic Management and Safety Protocols
To facilitate the necessary repairs, a temporary diversion of traffic will be essential. The Cabildo emphasizes the importance of stringent safety measures during this period. “We are commencing now with the initial traffic diversion works, which we need to keep in place until the end of August when the provisional detours will be operational,” explained President Lloret. Although the timing may not be ideal for such an initiative, he assures residents that this undertaking has been long overdue and requires immediate attention.
Economic Impact and Community Responsibility
Recognizing the challenges posed by construction, Lloret expressed that “we are aware that it’s not the best time to start these works.” However, he insisted that it is crucial to fulfill budgetary obligations and stimulate the island’s economy. The President calls for the community’s understanding and cooperation, especially regarding safety while the detours are enacted. “We will collaborate closely with the project management team and contractors to expedite the works and complete them as swiftly as possible,” he added.
Timeline and Additional Features
The estimated duration of the improvement project is four months. In addition to road surfacing, the works will include the installation of new horizontal and vertical signage, as well as enhanced marking along the road. These technical improvements aim not only to elevate road safety but also to provide indirect benefits to the local biodiversity.
Protection of Biodiversity
One of the noteworthy outcomes of this project is its commitment to environmental preservation. President Lloret highlighted that the measures taken will help prevent water from overflowing its banks during heavy rains, thereby safeguarding the local species and their habitats. “These upgrades will ensure that the waters remain contained and do not adversely affect the wildlife that resides in this area,” he stated.
Project Award and Contractor Engagement
The responsibility for carrying out these extensive improvements has been entrusted to a consortium composed of Construcciones Rodríguez Ramírez (CORORASA) and Tecnología de la Construcción y Obras Públicas (TECOPSA). As part of the project commitments, the contractor has also proposed enhancements to the roundabout signage at Lajares and will provide employment for two workers throughout the duration of the construction efforts.
This substantial investment towards the FV-10 road’s rehabilitation embodies a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure that blends technical requirements with a commitment to environmental stewardship and community welfare.
