A Festival in the Sky: The XXXVII International Kite Festival of Corralejo

This past Saturday, the XXXVII International Kite Festival of Corralejo in Fuerteventura was a sight to behold, drawing crowds in the thousands. Enthusiasts, curious observers, tourists, locals, and families flocked to the Grandes Playas, captivated by approximately 500 kites soaring through the skies above the stunning natural backdrop of the Dunas de Corralejo. The weather proved to be perfect, with ideal wind conditions and plenty of sunshine, allowing vibrant kites of all shapes and sizes to dance overhead.

A Gathering of International Kite Flyers

Close to 300 kite flyers made their way to this picturesque location from diverse corners of the globe, including Brazil, Turkey, Sweden, England, and Germany. They took advantage of the excellent wind conditions and sunny temperatures to launch their kites into the air, turning the Fuerteventura sky into a canvas of moving colors. The festival not only showcased the artistry of kites but also fostered a strong sense of community among participants and spectators alike.

Majestic Kites Capture Attention

One of the highlights of the day was undoubtedly the sight of a massive 30-meter-long lizard kite, which became the focus for many who wanted to capture the event’s vibrancy on camera. Liana, the kite’s proud owner from Genoa, struggled to control her creation against the robust winds but beamed with pride nonetheless. Equally impressive was a 15-by-7-meter fish kite flown by her compatriot Salvatore from Turin, both of which brought smiles and awe from festival-goers.

A Thrilling Atmosphere

With the beach and sky packed full, the event has been hailed as one of the most successful days in the festival’s history. Long-time attendees, Dave and Claire from England, expressed their excitement, noting that this was their third consecutive festival. The couple has traveled extensively with their kites, even visiting locations like the United States, India, and Italy. “We love Corralejo, all of Fuerteventura,” they shared, echoing the sentiments of many who appreciate the festival’s charm and the locality’s stunning scenery.

Official Praise and Future Prospects

Canada’s Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, also joined in the festivities, emphasizing the event’s significance in showcasing the beautiful beaches and exceptional climate of the region. She pointed out that few places in Europe enjoy such favorable weather conditions, especially in November. “The images, the landscapes, the colors of Fuerteventura make all media outlets want to cover the festival,” de León noted, highlighting the low investment required for such an event compared to the extensive advertising benefits it brings.

Acrobatic Displays and Family Involvement

Adding to the excitement were the dazzling acrobatic displays featuring up to 19 kites flying synchronously without intertwining their strings, a testament to the skill of their operators. Additionally, thrilling Rokaku battles took place, where lightweight kites engage in a contest of aerial strength, vying to knock each other out of the sky.

Families enjoyed a well-rounded day of activities, taking part in environmental workshops and kite-making sessions right on the sand. This engagement made for a perfect family outing under the glorious sun.

The XXXVII International Kite Festival continues today, promising even more excitement and colorful displays in the skies above Fuerteventura.
