As excitement builds on the stunning shores of La Concha beach in El Cotillo, the 18th edition of the Fuerteventura en Música (FEM) festival is ready to kick off this coming Friday and Saturday, July 5th and 6th. The festival, which celebrates not only music but also cultural diversity and environmental awareness, is positioned to be one of the most anticipated events in the Canary Islands this summer.

Setting the Scene

In the days leading up to the festival, audio-visual production teams have been working tirelessly to ensure that every aspect of the festival is perfect. From sound checks to light setups, the area surrounding the press conference is abuzz with activity. Local officials and festival coordinators, including the festival presenter Mariam Hernández, local artists like DJ CHK and Supawayah, along with international guest Francisco el Hombre, detailed what attendees can expect at this year’s event.

A Festival with Purpose

Organized by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, this festival provides a significant economic stimulation to the local community in El Cotillo. After twenty years since its inception, FEM has grown from a local gathering into an international platform that features a diverse lineup of artists. This year promises an abundance of talent, with both international and local acts and a series of workshops and musical activities planned for Saturday at the Muellito de El Cotillo in partnership with the cultural association Cotillo Joven.

Musical Lineup Highlights

Concerts will commence each evening at 20:00, hosted by Mariam Hernández, with DJ CHK taking charge during band transitions.

The festival will kick off on the night of July 5th with an exciting mix of genres. Highlights include:

  • La Plazuela, a Granada-based band fusing flamenco and funk.
  • Iseo & Dodosound from Navarra, known for their charismatic performances.
  • Green Valley, hailing from Barcelona, bringing reggae and dancehall vibes.

  • The Balkan Paradise Orchestra known for their energetic performances.
  • Colombian group Systema Solar, who will electrify the crowd with their Afro-Caribbean rhythms.
  • Local talents Ant Cosmos and Julia Rodríguez, influencing the Fuerteventura music scene.
  • The evening will draw to a close with a nostalgic set from DJ CHK, inspired by the narrative of Zipi and Zape.

Daytime Activities and Transportation

Alongside the evening concerts, Saturday will also see a well-curated schedule of cultural activities, dubbed “FEM de Día.” These events aim to enliven the historic and urban areas of El Cotillo. More information about these daytime activities can be found here.

To facilitate access to the festival, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura is providing a special transportation service, ensuring that festival-goers can commute effortlessly.

Welcoming Summer with Cultural Diversity

During the festival’s presentation, President of the Cabildo, Lola García, emphasized the importance of this anniversary edition. She articulated the festival’s mission: to serve as a focal point for music and cultural interactions while boosting the local economy in northern Fuerteventura. The event not only unites people through music but also acts as a showcase for local artists.

García expressed her gratitude towards the La Oliva Town Hall for their collaboration in ensuring that attendees enjoy both music and the natural surroundings of El Cotillo while being mindful of environmental considerations. El Cotillo’s Mayor, Isaí Blanco, encouraged the public to attend, underscoring the festival’s significance in energizing the community.

A Musical Journey Around the World

The artistic director of the festival, Semi Gil, alongside local representatives and participating bands, captured the collective spirit of the festival. The excitement from Francisco El Hombre, a promising band from the Latin music scene, echoed the sentiments shared by many; they are in paradise and eager to deliver an unforgettable musical experience in Fuerteventura.

As the sun sets over La Concha, the vibrant sounds of diverse musical styles will blend with the warm summer breeze, setting the stage for an unforgettable weekend at FEM 2024.
